Low humidity

Hi twice this winter we have had extremely cold weather and the humidity has dropped into the very low 30’s. Both times my breathing has been extremely bad so much so I have struggled to move from room to room. Over the last week I have used a whole big tank of oxygen which normally lasts me 2/3 weeks. Has any one else had this problem and if so have you found anything to help with this problem?

Many thanks Barbs x

Its a problem in the winter months with central heating and staying inside a lot of the time, I recently bought the Vicks (cool mist) humdifier, it can raise the humidity in the room by 5% within about 2 hours, so pretty good for its small size. So from 32 % it raised to 37% (the humidifier putting more moisture in the air when its too dry) its usually my sinuses that get badly affected.

The cold air if you are going outside or temperature is too cold inside is going to affect breathing among other things of course.

Thanks Bkin that’s very interesting. I do not go out so it’s not the cold just the low humidity. I will get myself Vicks humidifier and hope that helps. Barbs x

hope it helps. If your temperature is dropping at night in the bedroom this will also affect your breathing, (I do keep heating on through the night around 17C when it very cold out)

I also find with heavy rains outside (which is what we are forecast) increases humidity in the room, this weather can also affect lungs, (I do open windows daily to change the air for about 20 minutes) Its good to have a humidity thermometer to determine when to humidify or dehumidify - this time of year because of central heating, its more in need of humidifying.

Last night humidity was 41% in my living room, this morning after the rains I am 47%.

Keep well

Hi I have a humidity gauge which I keep an eye on, I know when the humidity is high I have to use my dehumidifier and fan but this is the first year I’ve had a problem with low humidity. We can’t win can we Barbs x

I always struggle when humidity and air pressure drops. As far as I can tell there is no remedy. However be careful not over oxygenate and only use the amount prescribed as I spent an awful week in hospital with trapped CO2. Take care.

Oh dear that must have been bad for you. I do only use what is prescribed and I use a pulse oximetry to check my oxygen levels. Bkin suggested a Vicks cool mist humidifier so I am going to get one ready in case the humidity drops low again. Barbs x
