How long between nebulisers?

Lynnetp profile image

Evening everyone. I’ve just used my salbutamol nebuliser for the first time. I also now have saline solution to use in the nebuliser. Does anyone know if there a minimum time to wait in between using salbutamol and saline solution?

Hi Lynne just to say Pete uses salbutamol first to open up the airways and then follows with the saline. Others may say differently, which is fine, but that’s what Pete does.

Take care xxxx

That makes sense. I’ll give that a whirl as I’ve kind of been left to my own devices! I knew I could rely on help from this forum 😊

Thank you 😊 xxx

As per other replies, salbutamol then saline: you want to open up the airways to allow the saline to be more effective and maximise clearance. As with using a salbutamol inhaler instead of a neb, there’s no minimum gap.

Hi Rodders1941. I am no expert by any means. I asked advice from the people on the site with far more knowledge and experience than me. I’m going to trial the salbutamol first thing when I wake and then shower ...for the steam to help too! I’ll then do the saline neb to help with clearance. I can certainly keep you posted with my progress 😊

I’m not sure what you have but there is MAC bacteria in the steam of showers... with any lu g disease we have a 30 percent chance of picking up new bacteria..this is from Mayo Clinic and National Jewish.. both world renown

Hi, sorry for delayed response. I have Copd ‘ emphysema. I didn’t know about the bacteria in steam from showers. I have a window open & leave the door open. Are there other recommendations for us do you know?

Lynnetp just read your email again ,l dont know if you have ever used it , but a week ago my wife ask me to try some canabis oil a few drops under my tongue before l went to sleep , and surprise surprise it did seem to have a effect to ease my breathing when l got up next day. but l think the jury is still out on canabis products. have you heard of any one whose tried it ? take care Rodders 1941

Hi Rodders1941, I actually have tried CBD oil a while ago but was very cautious because if it’s anti inflammatory properties 🙈 I’ll never use ibuprofen or Beechams or any anti inflammatory products so that was my only concern. It’s really interesting that it helped your breathing on waking! That’s great! Can I ask what strength of oil you’re using? I would also be very interested to hear if anyone else has had experience with CBD oil & if it’s had positive effects for us lungies!Lynne 😊

Lynnetp lv asked my wife about the strength of the hemp oil she said it was just hemp oil not CBD , shes a ex nurse very up on medication so l take her advice , she takes CBD for her aches and pains it seems to work for her. yes it would be interesting to see if anyone else has tried it ! take care Rodders 1941

I do it as part of my getting up routine. By late morning the mucus is ready for my big daily session to clear it. I have to adjust the timing of this according to whether I am going out or not. If I am going through a phase when the mucus is a bit stickier and bits get stuck to cause trouble during the night I neb again about two hours before I go to bed so that I can move it before sleeping.

We are allso different and so it is up to us to work out what we need to do.

Guidelines are guidelines, written by people who study data but that can never replace listening to our own bodies.

Littlepom thanks for replying. its very helpful but does it help your breath more easily. Rodders1941

in reply to rodders1941

As I have bronchiectasis, any shortnessof breath is caused by mucus collected in the alveoli and airways which blocks the air from making its way in and out efficiently.

The salbutamol opens the airways, the saline thins the mucus and the result is that I can remove the mucus and allow the air to pass in and out properly.

So yes, it follows that it helps my breathing.

I hope that helps.

Hi Rodders1941, it’s a bit trial & error but yes, so far so good! Salbutamol neb first thing then I just let that settle for 10-15 minutes then do the saline neb. It has really helped open up my airways & loosen up the lung gunk and it seems much easier to get more effective clearance. This has resulted in my breathing feeling quite a bit better. I actually went to the cemetery yesterday to my parents grave.... on my own... which is unheard of! I am on steroids at the minute too do I do have to attribute some of the good feeling to that, but I’m very hopeful the meds are playing their part 😊

Hope that helps 😊

Take care

hi l went on a course last year ,l enjoyed it very much , But afterwards it made me think it was all stop gap and no cure, and l felt they were using us as guinea pigs and should have informed the group were the information from us was going. but l did enjoy it and l wish they would give us a course every year. take care Rodders 1941
