Bruising

Is there a link with medication and bruising very easily, or is it an age thing? I only have to give myself a light knock and a bruise appears. Thank you

Hi Nina I bruise easily more so since I’ve got older and have been taking steroids. Usually after taking them I am covered with bruises that and being very clumsy. My friend calls me Calamity Jane. 😂

I'm am a copd sufferer have inhalers and steroids over the last few years slightest bang and it develops into a lump and is tender dosent help that my legs swell up due to water retention spoke to my consultant last year and he wasnt to worried about it.

I also have red blotches that pop up on my arms then slowly disappear so weird. Had blood tests to check things and all clear they are putting it down to age and medication

Hi Nina. Certain medications do lead to easy bruising, especially with aspirin which I take together with inhalers and occasionally steroids for bronchiectasis and asthma. The slightest pressure on my skin causes a bruise, and my arms and legs are always covered with them. When I have bloods taken my arm always bruises with the imprints of the nurse's fingers. My skin has also become very thin, and tears easily. At the moment I have 2 plasters on my arm because my skin burst open as I levered myself up on the arms of my computer chair.

As everyone has said there is a link with steroids & bruising. BUT there is also evidence that bruising increases with age. So I would take your pick x

I had massive bruising from the steroids in inhalers long before I began to age, also thinning skin. It did improve a lot when my inhaler was changed to Fostair a few years ago. A respiratory nurse once told me that it was impossible for inhalers to cause bruising and thinning of skin - stupid ignorant woman - most medics would agree that its totally possible. I do pity people who have to take oral steroids as well. Wearing tubigrip on my arms when gardening is a great protection. X

Can be both (medication and part of the aging process) Cardiac maintenance dose of asprin caused me excessive bruising as well, had to stop taking that.

Do you know i try to find out about ageing and there is no information. Thete are books for teen agers about changing body but not for oldIes. I am sure i worry about things that turn out to be ageing and normal , but what about other s that should be investigated? I bruise too and they just appear, but i am on blood thinners . The steroid inhalers didnt cause this but the combination is probably too much .

Hi Hun, My Consultant told me very early(Years ago) on that to expect Bruising from the Steroid intake, ie: Prednisolone, Salbutamol, even Ventolin , So it is a combination along with aging but, we wouldn't be aging except for all the Meds, Its a Vicious Circle. Eating a Tub of hard Ice Cream and having to dig in with a spoon gave me a huge Blood Blister in between my Thumb and forefinger, that is now a Huge Bruise. all the other bruises I just live with.

So I can Breathe, and have Bruises. That's our Lives with Medication Side Affects. Stay Well & safe. C. XXX

I am fair and have always bruised easily. Its because I'm fairy princess but was swapped at birth! 😂 My Mom was concerned I had leukaemia as a child because of the bruises. Now, being poorly and 61 I'm like the princess and the pea!

I’m on a steroid inhaler and I’m always covered in bruises. My Son has given me some long arm protectors for when I do my housework which this week because it’s so warm I didn’t put on. So I’ve got some lovely bruises up my arms. I just rubbed my leg on the chair and I have a big bruise going down my shin. It’s annoying but it just happens so I’m afraid I have to put up with it. I’ve had tests done by the Dr but nothing was found. It always pays to check it out when things get back more normal. That’s if it ever does.
