Fatty tongues could be main driver of sleep apnoea.

A sleep disorder that can leave people gasping for breath at night could be linked to the amount of fat on their tongues, a study suggests.

When sleep apnoea patients lost weight, it was the reduction in tongue fat that lay behind the resulting improvements, researchers said.

Larger and fattier tongues are more common among obese patients.

But the Pennsylvania team said other people with fatty tongues may also be at risk of the sleep disorder.

The researchers now plan to work out which low-fat diets are particularly good at slimming down the tongue.

I need to lose weight! I didn't use to be overweight, partly I blame it on getting home late from work therefore eating late, partly the horrendous weather most of the year here so I don't get out so much, well there are a whole lot of reasons but I need to do something about it!

The 8 o clock news just came on the radio and this article was on it. The BBC presenter reading the story fell about laughing. Firstly, how unprofessional is that. Personally I didn't find anything remotely amusing about this story. Is this not indicative of attitudes to respiratory problems. Something to be laughed at, dismissed as trivial, or the object of blame or shame.

I agree it is not a laughing matter at all but a serious medical condition. I would suggest the presenter spend a night attached to a CPAP machine and see if that is funny.

Not joking but....tongue liposuction! Also the less you weigh, the easier it is to sleep on your side or stomach.
