Oxygen and driving

Hi everyone I havent been on here for a long time and will update you all on my dads condition on a different post, but I would just like a bit of advice from you all.

He is on oxygen therapy at 7 and 11. He has ambulatory O2 to boost the mains oxygen when he is moving about. His doctor has said that he shouldnt be driving. However when he is driving his breathing is more regulated as he is concentrating on driving, not breathing.

Has anyone else been told they cant drive? Obviously each person is differnet and we are trying to work things through but I am just wondering gow everyone else has got on.

Thanks xx

Hi

I use Ambulitory oxygen therapy 4 lpm, and still drive, never been told not to drive. Any other reason given?

No just that because he is so breathless and his oxygen levels are high when he is moving he has to be on 11 lpm? I am going there tomorrow and he has macmillan support nurse in so I will have a chat with her x

Hi Wellyboot0_0 . 😁

Long time no see. 👋 When I was on O2 I was not told I can't drive. I think you will have to ask in more detail as to why not. Taking away his mobility will be a blow I think. I hope your dad is now used to everything more and is doing better. Take good care.

I’m on 4 litres and drive. I would be housebound if I couldn’t. I hope your dad is allowed to after seeking further advice. Good luck. Joy x

Thanks, I just wonder if its because he is on 11 litres when he is moving into and out of the car. I will have to check with the doctor, or his macmillan nurse today xxx

Hi, please can you explain what you mean when you say your Dad is on oxygen therapy 7 and 11?

Hope he is doing ok. I look after my Mum who is on 24 hour a day oxygen at one and a half litres from a machine; ambulatory cylinder usually 2litres.

Regards

Oh I see thanks. It surprises me how much oxygen some people are on.

Seems to be a bit rubbish if your Dad is ok driving but they want to take that away.

I imagine that there will be insurance issues about it too.

They never fail to use anything and everything possible to take more money. Not that they ever want to pay any back.

As long as your dad feels safe and confident and insurance why not drive. Shouldnt take his lifelines away.
