Hi everyone. I love pottering in the garden but struggle with weeding as bending over really puffs me out. I’ve got a little stool but that doesn’t really help as stiill have to bend. Any handy tips would be greatly appreciated .

I have Empysemia; Bronchiectasis and a couple of holes in one lung caused by lung abscess after having severe pneumonia in 2014 when I was first diagnosed with COPD. Rose

Hi, I to have the same problem due to severe emphysema, I use a stool to sit gardening but I have a set of long handle tools which makes it a lot easier to do the flower beds maybe you could get some of those to help. Wendy

I bought a long handled secateurs type gadget, and a long handled grabber , but the automatic weeder tool I bought was not much use on soft ground , only worked on the lawn, but left big holes in that.

My asthmatic neighbour , sits on a chair and weeds with a long handled small fork, but she has one raised bed which helps too. She also has had one bed mulched with a liner and pebbles found in the garden on top.

I have just bought a gardening stool on wheels, but that does not help with bending, and a garden wheeled bin affair, which I line and use for garden waste, but then I find it difficult to pull the full bin bag out, so I will have to have a rethink.

Hi

Look at.

Could also consider raised beds. Or planters on a suitable bench.

Hi stone . Thanks for the link. Have had a brief look but will look properly later. Looks to be just what I need.

I use gel knee pads and do my gardening on my hands and knees. I don't dig. I mulch to kill weeds and feed the soil. I grow easy to look after plants. I rest frequently. I accept help as and when I need it.

Hi there. All brilliant ideas to consider, thank you. I do accept help with the heavier side of gardening but I’m stubborn and don’t like to give in on the easier stuff. Usually do short stints of gardening and looking into changing to shrubs and plants that just need a tidy up now and then. Thanks once again.

I do my vegetable gardening in raised beds so that I don't have to bend too much sitting down to hoe and weed.

I kneel or lie down and rest on one elbow and use the right hand with a trowel

I am at the very severe stage, but still manage the garden. I certainly could not sit on a still and lean forward to weed. It would squeeze my abdomen too much. So I have a kneeler with side handles for pushing myself up. Lean forward and support weight with left hand and work with right. Works for me.

I kneel on an old sheepskin rug and stretch forward so I'm not bending over! Still use short handled tools, though getting up is fun!
