Oxygen 24/7 downsides?

My dad is on oxygen therapy 24/7 on 2 while resting and sleeping and then up to 4 when actually doing anything. We are awaiting the panel diagnosis but are fairly sure he has IPF.

Are there any downsides to having oxygen therapy? He has an oxymeter and with the oxygen he is up to 95 but he was down to 86 without it.

I havent googled it just thought I would ask on here as you all seem to be such a great base for knowledge and understanding.

Hi

Oxygen therapy is given to protect your major organs, keeping to the recommended LPM, will give the required protection

Treat as any other medicine, only change the flow rate with the approval of the oxygen team.

He is very good at sticking to what they are saying and it is definitely improving his sats. His giddyness and mild blackouts and confusion have stopped but I just wondered if this was the start of a downhill slope?

Hi Hun, I was Diagnosed Stage 4 COPD 2013 after a few Years of suffering, so I was at a Severe stage. It wasn't until 2015 I was Prescribed Oxygen for 24/7, it has been my Best Friend, along with Exercise, Good Diet, Don't Smoke, I am now on 02 16/7, still Stage 4, and have been on The Transplant List. I have pushed myself to stay Fit and always Positive, I now do Breathe Better, I must Thank my 4 Blingy Valves I had last June. So, for me there hasn't been a Downside to Oxygen. I do have Friends whom I can see Struggling, who will not have Oxygen, I think we are all Different, Your Dad , you say is awaiting Diagnosis. Only the Consultants can do This. Good Luck and stay Positive. Hugs for your Dad. xxx

Thank you...yes my dad is a googler, I never do. My dad had a double heart bypass 5 years ago and has been ok ish since then but in the last 10 months his breathing has been getting worse. He has now been on oxygen after referral from hospital and gp for about 3 weeks now. It doesnt seem to be helping with his breathlessness but is keeping his sats up. I just wondered if it is the start of a downhill slope or if by being on oxygen 24/7 will gradually make him even more dependant on it. Not worried as such about him being on it as I appreciate it is definitely helping but just worrying how 'serious'it is. We have got to go back to papworth in a couple of weeks and I will ask them, justbreally trying to get a heads up of what to expect for the future really xx

Thank you for replying x
