Travelling with My Bipap Machine

Hi everyone, haven't been on here for a while hope your all getting on in this beautiful hot weather. Does anyone have any advice about travelling with a bipap machine? I've been invited to a birthday party in Birmingham it will involve some travelling and an overnight stay. This I've never done before. Feeling slightly nervous about the whole idea.

Hi LawH1512,

I travel with my BiPAP quite often up and down the country, it is really easy, you just unplug it pack it away and connect it back up when you get to your destination, remember if you use a humidifier empty it before packing it and refill it when you set it up again.

When you connect it up it will register with the SD card and is ready to use again.

It really is that simple, I hope that helps.

Is travelling with it in a car easier, I'm relying on public transport, as I don't drive

When you got your BiPAP it will have a carry case, mine is a ResMed Lumis 150 and come with a soft carry case, I don’t drive and take mine on the train and in taxis, but if you are able to go by bus or coach it is very light to carry.

I’m assuming you use the BIPAP for Co2 retention? Can I ask what FEV you guys are?

I'm not on oxygen, still being fairly new to all this I'm not sure what FEV is, but I do use the BIPAP machine for co2. Feel better about traveling with it.

Don't worry LawH1512, just take step by step , when I am nervous traveling I give my self little goals and saying to myself your doing ok lady and it works,my doctor also reminds me slowly you go and take deep breaths.

I'm intrigued by the references to CO2 - I thought my RESMED machine was improving my oxygen intake and preventing my from stopping breathing in the middle of the night (sleep apnea). Have I got it wrong?

Hi sunwalker, I've got it wrong you're right its the same thing for me with my sleep apneo. I'm just really crap at this on here. But thanks everyone, I'm feeling much better and looking forward to my weekend away taking my BIPAP machine with me. Excited about my new adventure. Cheers all

You are just fine (not crap) on this site. Good question. I travel via car on holidays with my bipap, no problem. Just keep it out of sunlight if it's near a window. Just plug in and use as usual. If flying, of course they will have you take it out of any carry ons and have you separate the parts for checks. No probs there. They do a bunch everyday. Enjoy and let us know how the vacation goes.

We have travelled much with my machine in tow. The trick is to make sure the water is emptied and take a small bottle of distilled water to fill up. There is no problem unless you can't sleep in a strange bed. I usually pack an extension chord in case the plug is a bit distant. If we stay at a hotel I let them know that I have a breathing machine and need a stand to put it on. If not a chair works as well. Be flexible and enjoy the trip.
