Am I allowed to have sedation for a colonoscopy if I have moderate COPD (FEV¹ of 61%) ?

Thanks,

i recently had mild sedation 1.5 mg Midazolam for an endoscopy,my resp consultant refused to take responsibility as i have only 22% fev i lung capacity.this was negotiated with my gastro consultant and i had no problems at all.if you are concerned you can always ask them to also drip feed you o2 at a low lpm to bolster your o2 levels...........regards Ski's and scruffs

I had mild sedation ggeorgiou and my FEV1 was at about 36% at the time. They actually did not want to sedate me, but I got huffy and said sedation or I'm going back to my ward. I mean really..😑. So, I don't think you will have any problem.

Take it easy.

It's the second one I have had. I had sedation for a colonoscopy in August 2016 but didn't realise I had COPD at that time. I have IBD so they are going to check if it hadn't spread as I have been going through a major flare recently :-(

I think you should be asking the endoscopy team ? They will know the answer, and even if they say no then it isn’t too much discomfort without.

Good Luck!

Usually ok if you have no symptoms of colds/ flu/ chest infection on the day. They should check your temperature pre op. Take care

You can have sedation with little chance of a problem... But why do you think you need sedation for colonoscopy? I've had 3 times without & no problems.

I've also had a couple of gastroscopies without... now THAT isn't for the faint hearted.

Best wishes either way.. lol

It depends on each individual..think the heart is the most important thing to consider. I am moderate copd and have had numerous sinus Operations and perfectly ok..your consultant should be able to advise..

I had one,If you watch it you only get a little pain it's just like wind but SLIGHTLY more painful I took an interest in what was going on and just relaxed. I have COPD but I could have had drugs/air&gas etc but the pain IS bearable it IS wind because they put air in your large intestine so just watch and learn relax it only takes about 15mins at the most good luck and don't worry regards Tom

I am with 23% projected and I recently had a bladder biopsy and I took Lorazepam for sedation which I will do again when they take a prostate biopsy. Best of luck and you will be fie with sedation but always check with your GP or respiratory team.

Hi all. The sedation went fine but I am having a nasty flare with my IBD and have been admitted to hospital. Currently having IV steriods injected into me to try and get it under control.
