Breathless for 2 weeks?

Hi, I've been tight chested and breathless for nearly 2 weeks now. 2 chest xrays, 3 lots of bloods, all clear. Docs say chest is clear. Coughing up green mucus in the morning. I'm on a second course of prednisolone and a fostair inhaler. Hospital thinks maybe asthma but myself and my doctor aren't convinced as I'm not asthmatic, I'm 35 and usually very fit, running 25 miles a week. I had similar symptoms to this in January but it went away after 5 days. Any one else having or had similar symptoms?

Thanks for reading.

Luke

Hello Hidden .

What a worry. I'm sorry you are poorly. 😖

Were you prescribed any inhalers?

Coughing up green phlegm, this may be a sign of an infection. Other causes vary, but sinusitis and pneumonia also can cause this. But since you say your x-rays and blood are clear, how about your sinuses? Just out of curiosity, were the doctors pulmonologists?

I would definitely consider getting a second or third opinion. It may be nothing at all, but it's good to put your mind at ease. I hope you let us know how you are getting on. I hope it clears up very soon.

Sending best wishes.

Thanks for the reply. The doctors have rolled out any bacterial infection, maybe viral?

My peak flow is also between 650-750.

This is all very strange.

Hi Caspiana! Sorry to tag on to this one can I ask you something? It's been five weeks since my sinus operation. My right nostril seems clear now but the left is still blocked. Can it take a long time to unblock after it? I'm still rinsing twice a day only getting the odd bit gunk now mostly gone and the scabs have gone I was givn Nasepin cream for it which really helped. The pressure is much better still a little bit in the evenings and my nose is tender if I touch it but much better then a few weeks ago!

I'm seeing my ENT in couple of weeks but last time I saw him he said it was healing really well. I just wish I wasn't blocked at all though! I must still be careful when I blow though blew bit too hard again yesterday and got a bit of blood.

Hello Shancock .

I vividly remember thinking how on earth could it take so long for my sinuses to unblock. Like you, one side was fairly stuffed up for a long, long time. But everytime I went to the doctor he'd clean it out, put in a little camera and show me how good the the operation site looked and how it's "healing well". It was infuriating sometimes, because it just interfered with everything , especially sleep. Your sinuses will just keep producing gunk until it completely heals. If I learned anything it was it heals in it's own time. Hang in there, it literally is a matter of time. I really sympathise. *gentle hugs*.

It could be nasty viral an X-ray should show up any infection as they're quite easily seen on an X-ray although not much else is. I had horrendous bout of Bronchitis last October coughing for 5 weeks! As Caspiana rightly said it could be sinus too, maybe post nasal drip very common with a nasty cough too.

I would try using a sinus rinse, get one from the chemist Neilmed is the easiest one to use, the starter kit has the bottle in it and instructions. It will help clear out any gunk and keep your sinus hygenic. Hot drinks especially hot water is very good for a bad cough and steam. Paracetamol and rest and keep warm.

If it doesn't clear later in the week go back to GP they may have to investigate further with perhaps a CT scan of the lungs? You can cough up green mucus with viral bronchitis, I usually do when I get it.

Thanks for the reply shancock, did you also have a tight chest?

My doctor says she's confident it's nothing serious, but I can't help but worry.

Everytime I get bronchitis Inget tight chest and breathless, that's typical with bronchitis. Although it's viral they usually give antibiotics as It can turn to infection if left.

I do hav mild asthma though and sinus so always get it worse.

Also may I say this came on extremely suddenly, I actually remember thinking wow my chest has gone tight!

It can come on all of a sudden. Itll clear up im sure an x ray should show any infection. Bronchitis is painful if it gets very bad they may suggest a lung fuction test. Google breathing exercises an that may help.
