Allergic Asthma

Hi .

I suffer with allergic asthma, over the years the allergies have become worse.

The doctor has given me some tablets called Montelukast.

Has anyone taken these? if so are they worth taking?

I take them and I find they help, I take them at night but some people find they can cause insomnia or side effects, I’ve never experienced that myself but we are all different.I have been recently prescribed a drug named Phyllocontin which protects the lungs from allergens and relaxes the diaphragm and lungs allowing deeper breaths they have helped a lot but the drug is related to caffeine so it does leave me feeling like I’ve had too much coffee but my o2 levels and allergies have improved.Hope this is helpful.

I think I will give these tablets a go as I am getting worse I'm not one for taking tablets with all the side effects etc, but I'm getting desperate and it's spoiling my life, I have multiple allergies the list is endless, but no food allergy thank goodness.

I will mention the other tablet to my doctor today when I see him.

Sorry to hear your getting worse I would give the montelukast a try as you may be like me and get no side effects at all, hope the doctor helps you with the phyllocontin.All the best.

The doc won't give me Phyllocontin, I've to try the Montelukast.

Yes I take montelukast. Dream and sleep side effects at first but settled down and sensitivities not gone but hugely reduced.

Hello Janlyn, I've been taking Montelukast for over 10 years now and found them definitely worth taking. My consultant when he prescribed them told me they'd take a couple of weeks to have an effect, but I found that it was at least 4 weeks before my breathing suddenly felt better (he says he's now amended his advice to other patients). So please do persevere with them if you don't feel an immediate benefit.

Thank you, I'm starting them tonight, I've a chest infection so on Antibiotics as well.

Montelukast is the generic name for Singulair. I have been taking the 10MG pink/orange square tablets for over 20 years. It was the first medication to take for the beginning of my COPD. I do notice a slight difference if I try to stop taking them daily, so for me they must do something. I still sneeze a lot so they do nothing much for that. But as far as breathing easier, they do. Hope that helps.

I noticed a significant improvement in my lung function when I started on montelukast. I haven't had any side effects, though I don't sleep well anyway. It reduces inflammation so I imagine it could really help with your allergic asthma. It might be best to wait before asking about phyllocontin, because if you do notice an improvement (or a side effect) you won't know which drug has caused it. I couldn't get on with phyllocontin - it helped my breathing a lot, but my heart rate went bonkers so I couldn't sleep at all! But lots of people seem to do really well on it.

Hi I have been taking Montelukast for some time it definitely helps. I also discovered a surprising side effect. I had a small patch of gum disease that my dentist said was immune related and when I started taking Montelukast it stopped dead and even reversed some of the bone loss. My dentist was flabbergasted and said that he had never seen it happen before. I have since read of research into its use in preventing gum disease which often occurs in copd. Something positive to consider.

I'm going to give this drug a go, see if it helps my allergies, they really get me down.😊
