Any advice welcome

Since my cancer op I have been managing to maintain my 8 stone body weight. But last week ended up in hospital with severe stomach pain and put on IV antibiotics. Infection from gall bladder and put on fat free diet, had gall stones for years and had episodes in the past. Op not an option. Would be grateful for any dietary advice , have poor appetite and not been out for 6 days. Joyce

Hi Joyce sorry to hear all this. Why not ask to see a nutritionist? My mother had gall bladder problems and she got very thin so she was prescribed build up drink Ensure. This is very high in calories and has all the essential vitamins. She never had any problems with it.

Don't forget to take vitamin D if you can't get out and about as well. x

Good I am glad it is helpful. Don't forget there are lots of different build up drinks/foods and you might find one you like better. My mother liked the Ensure coz there were lots of different flavours available and even yogurt ones.

Don't forget too that if you are in the UK and underweight you can get them on prescription so you might pay nothing for them. x

I am underweight I have three Fortisip fruit drinks each day ON PRESCRIPTION I get about 60 a time delivered all different flavours. I could not tolerate the milky drinks. Each drink is about 300 calories. Ask your gp to refer you to a dietician. Don't forget to tell doc you want assorted flavours.as you can get bored if you have all the same flavours.

I had one of those in hospital and found it quite pleasant I too couldn't tolerate The milky ones and have been wondering if the fortisip are low fat, will look it up. Don't feel up to seeing anyone at the moment but will when I start to feel better thank you.

Hi Joyce, sorry about your gallbladder causing further problems, as if you don't have enough already. When I had this problem years ago , before my major surgery to remove the gallbladder, I was on a low fat diet with extra low fat milk to prevent me losing too much weight. Used to find coffee could start an attack, strange as it might seem. Ice cream was another no no.My mum used to find pork caused attacks. Hope this info helps, take care xx

All the suggestions on here are worth a try, can't be easy when you have so many health things to think about. Try to keep your fluids up at all costs, my daughter found additives in food caused her flare ups of gallbladder but to spite an op she still gets problems, so ops are not always the answer. I found a light fluid only diet was useful during flareups also with a pill from the doctor think it was maxolon , but guess they have other drugs these days, never had infection myself only blockage. Best wishes for finding dietary solutions there are many fat free foods around nowadays but take care not to loose weight if possible. Have a good day speak to you again soon.xx

Thank you Kate I am eating a little better but just napping all the time. Called inI A nE yesterday when a large bruise appeared on my arm with a solid lump in. Fearing a blood clot I went to have it checked, it's just a collapsed vein, just to treat with ice. Hope you are keeping well nice to hear when you have your breaks away x

Drink fruit juices and soft drinks and not water. Try adding sugar or glucose or honey or syrup to what you can eat. Remember to brush your teeth tho.
