Bronchiectasis/Carbocisteine

Is anyone taking Carbocisteine and experiencing any side effects.

I was on them for a week and felt really unwell but my consultant wants me to take them regularly and said its uncommon to have said effects with them, that it was probably the chest infection that I had that made me feel unwell.

If the side effects continue, I would ask your consultant if you can nebulise saline. There is isotonic 0.9% but much more effective in bronchiectasis is 3%, 6% or 7% which are all hypertonic. Isotonic has the same level as in all bodily fluids. Hypertonic higher and it acts like osmosis, the fluid in the lungs helping to lift the mucus. For the hypertonic you would have an assessment at the hospital as an outpatient.

Good luck.

I have cough, mucus, breathlessness and had lots of recurring chest infections I've only recently been diagnosed after having a CT scan I believe that's the only way they can diagnose bronchiectasis.

Yes, I have used it for about a year now and it does seem to thin the mucus. I don't think I have side effects but I am on other medication, so can't be positive. I would try it for a while, and then talk to your doctor. Good luck :)

Hi, I've been taking carbocisteine for around 5 years now without any side effects, I also started using 7% hypertonic saline each morning after a trial suggested by my consultant and it works a treat
