I awoke this morning with a cracking headache as if id had one too many last night. This is not the first time. (I havent had alcohol for five days) Im diagnosed copd/asthma. Can anyone explain why this happens? I also feel washed out and want to go back to bed.

Advice and comments appreciated, thankyou.

Its possible your building up c02 while your sleeping, its known as retaining and its something that happens to me.

You wake with chronic headaches that can ease off a little through the day , your drowsy and lack concentration

I would definitely mention it as it would show up when you have your blood gasses checked

Hi Mandy I am exactly the same, it's a real nuisance.

But sometimes it happens when I have a sinus infection ...paracetamol doesn't touch the headache.

Ive never had a sinus infection but my friend has and she was in a terrible state with it..

C02 retention headaches are worse than my migrains and it got so high i ended up falling asleep for a split second as i was sat watching tv with a hot drink in my hand and scalded my legs......i have a nippy machine now which keeps its under control but they are awful to sleep with x

Hi Natassa..

A nippy machine is something i use to help with my my c02 retention because when im sleeping im not releasing enough carbon dioxide ....

The best way i could explain it is if you think of a nebuliser and how your attached to that using a mask it is a similar thing in that your attached to a machine with a mask but the nippy forces air in when you take in a breath which sounds a bit scary but in fact is relaxing now that im use to it

I was diagnosed as a co2 retainer but I never experienced the headaches just felt drained. After a sleep study test at Harefield I was prescribed a NIPPY nasal mask. I Still can't sleep without sleeping pills but when my last blood gasses were taken the co2 was under control. Perhaps you should check with the hospital so they can advise?Have a good Christmas

It sounds as though you may have sleep apnoea to me. If this is the problem, you need to get it treated. A sleep test is the way forward.

Regards.
