Nose clip

I didn't get many replies to my last question but I hope this one gets a better response as it requires an easy answer. Did many of you have a nose clip fitted when you did your spirometry test?

No. I didn't but know I should have but in my area they are not really interested in lung disorders

That doesn't sound good, feeling they aren't interested. Joy.

Not me Lux, just breath in and blow. result copd 43% fev1.

Been doing breathing exercises daily since and 5k on an exercise bike, taking an inhaler on a morning, and start PR this tuesday in the hope I can improve before my next test at end of month.

With the spirometry test done by the Pulmonary Nurse at home no, but the Lung Function Test done in hospital, I did have.

Once in the surgery and once at the hospital.

Hello LuxN. ARTP represents the physiologists who do lung function tests and their guidelines say a clip must be used for VC (vital capacity) but not essential for FVC (forced vc) artp.org.uk/en/professional...

But Ive had loads of lung function tests and think Ive always had a clip for whole procedure, would have said the result not as reliable without one, air escapes through nose. Robin

I have had two spirometry tests done, one at the health centre and one at hospital and didn't have a nose clip in either of them.

Yes, the practice nurse at docs said that without it, she couldn't be sure it was accurate.

Always have the clip on, I hate it but I do believe it gives a true reading. Regarding the booth! Oh how awful is it in there, it scared the life out of me.

I still have memories, including the clip. Job to get my breathing right at the time but got there. Still recall the person doing the test - came from Poland.

Nose clip is best practice

Joy123 profile image

No, I've never had a nose clip and have a spirometer test 6 or more times a year. I have noticed though that the nurses usually ask me to sit whilst doing it but the doctors usually ask me to stand. I've questioned this and doctors say 'you should stand'. Same when using peak flow meter. I suppose everybody has their own technic, same with nose clip. Good luck. Joy.

It's not considered neccessary for spirometry, but it is neccessary for Pulmonary Function Test (PFT'S). I did ask a nurse why we can't stand to do spirometry as I feel I could blow out better standing up - she said they like us to sit because otherwise we might keel over. 'Humph!' I thought, 'I'm strong as a cart horse' ... until one time I blew so hard that even sat down I keeled over sideways and the nurse had to catch me!

The only time I had one was at the Royal Brompton in London when I went last year. Never had one at my local hospital or the surgery. XX

Always. It stops nose-breathing which negates the test.

Yes for the hospital for the big test but no for drs and resp. nurses. To be frank it does not matter at the moment as my nose is blocked up most of the time so cant breath in or out comfortably only respite is when I'm on oxygen when active as I guess it helps keep my nasal passages free from the allergens.

The first time I had my Spirometry measured at St George's Hospital Tooting I did have to wear a nose clip and I hated it my ears felt like they would pop but subsequent Spirometry tests at local Hospital were done without.

Hi, I always have a nose clip at the hospital when I have to blow till I'm red in the face. The blow is linked to a computer which registers everything. I don't have a nose clip at my surgery, it's just a simple hand held device. Hope this helps. Take care. Love Lizzy x

Yes, every time. And tried it without one (at my request) and the results were different. It seems that some are escapes from the nose. Not dramatic, but a change was evident.

No nose clip for tests at my Doctors. If tests are not uniform how can results be accurate ?

spirometer test and lung fuction what is the difference thought they were the same, it might just be me but peak flow doesn't interest my practice .or at least when I was monitoring my own and relayed the information to them it didn't seem to bother them my average at the time was 250 so I stopped checking it x

jackdup profile image
jackdup

I have always had a nose clip and would think you would need one or it would not be as accurate. If even only a few percent goes out your nose at the same time as you are blowing into the tube it would make the results far less accurate as it would not capture whatever amount of air went out your nose at the same time.
