I had mine last year and doesnt take too long. Just let them know if you feel uncomfortable x

I had one done a few weeks ago. They start by taking a medical history and a list of your meds. Then check your height. The scan took about 10 minutes, and was not uncomfortable so you should be OK.

Thanks folks, the feedback has me relaxed already.D.

Hi FarmerD, you should not have to lie down for very long but just let the person doing the scan know if you are not happy at all. Good luck to you. xxx

Thanks Sassy,stay healthy!D.

Hi Farmer, if it's a DEXA scan and anything like the one I had last year they'll only scan your hips and base of spine.

Results came back to say that's where I had osteoporosis but presumably it would also indicate the condition is in other bones also.

And yes, I think it took around 10 - 15mins and wasn't uncomfortable x

If osteoporosis is found do we have to stop the steroids?I ask because they seem to be the only thing that keeps me going.

That will be a decision for your doctor. I just have to take Alendronic acid once a week and adcal twice a day. The one thing with Dexa scans and the results is that your GP knows what to do.

I have to have a full scan every year. Ask for a pillow, Your legs will be raised onto a block. It takes about 10 minutes. It isn't uncomfortable. Just mention to them your concerns. Good luck.

Hi, I have had osteoporosis for many years and was first diagnosed by having a piece of bone taken out of my hip. Then I moved to Manchester and was referred to the metabolic clinic. They brought me in for a week each year for all kinds of tests and followed this up each year. My bone density was 50% lower than it should be but increased with Didronel. When I moved to Loughborough some 15 years ago I asked about having a scan. The only Dexa scanner was in the menopause clinic so they asked me to come in at lunchtime when no ladies were there - Oh the scandal of it :-) Yes, it only takes about 10 min max and sometimes you get a copy of the results showing where you are compared to norms. After a new and somewhat controversial treatment I am no longer in the danger zone and have been discharged.

Don't worry. It is not long. Hope the results are good and lead to appropriate treatment.

Hi Farmer D, I too have problems lying on my back especially on hospital couches. But I have had a bone scan recently and it takes very little time and I was only on my back for about 2 mins. Do not worry you will be fine. Good Luck Maximonkey

Just to let you all know,I had my Dexa scan and it was no problem at all,in fact I may look for one of those cube like cushions for under the knees as I found that part very comfortable. Thanks again for all the reassuring replies.D.

Hi I had bone scan a month ago and do not like lying flat but it only lasted about 10 minutes and I was fine. It helps to explain to the person assisting that you are uncomfortable lying flat for reassurance.
