Hi everyone… I’m a 75 year old male and two years ago I was diagnosed with angina. Had a stent fitted and was told the rest of my heart quite healthy with little bystander disease. Two years on and I’m suffering with almost complete intolerance of cold air. I’ve tried following the usual advice; breathing through a scarf, wearing a mask etc, nothing helps unfortunately.

I didn’t have this problem initially but it started to be a problem this winter and has gradually got worse until a short walk of a few hundred yards is impossible.

Has anyone else with angina developed cold air sensitivity a few years after having a stent fitted? If so can this problem be overcome other than avoiding going out in cold weather which is so limiting during the winter. Is there a medication available. My GTN spray makes little difference.

My medication regime is: Bisoprolol 2.5mg Edoxaban 40mg Atorvastatin 60mg and Esomeprazole 40mg. All of which I tolerate well at these doses.

Thank you in anticipation….

you sound a bit like my husband! After angina 20 years ago aged 59 he had a few stents, revised in 2007. About five years ago he started to feel the cold badly, with purple hands. Doctor diagnosed Reynauds - plenty of info about this online.

And he feels the cold more and as he can’t walk fast now he wears a woolly hat and gloves. Has slight chest pains if he walks in the cold after a meal.

When the temp is below say five degrees C he uses a heated jacket and uses an electric hand warmer if out for longer than 30 minutes or so.

when you say “sensitivity”, though, do you mean breathing?

but spring has sprung!

I do mean breathing. The other cold effects I can cope with but thanks for the reply Happyrosie.

Hi Atorvastatin gave me back pain so I switched to Rosuvastatin which I've been on for 6 months without any issues.

Hi there Englishsetter ( a dog lover no doubt, we have a GSP),

Have you been back to the doctor about this?

I had a heart attack December 2016 on a cold and frosty morning whilst out walking with my dogs. Later I was told that I need to be careful whilst out in the cold. To put a scarf over my mouth to keep my breathing in as warm as possible.

I had five stents a few months later. Then around eight months later I started to have angina problems again. Shortness of breath whilst out walking, especially in the cold weather, pain in my collarbone, pinching of the throat.

Eventually after having another angiogram I was told I’d need a heart bypass. So two years after having five stents I ended up having a quintuple bypass (five bypasses ).

That was six years ago and although I still get my 'off days' I’m pretty good and enjoying life.

So yes, the cold can affect your breathing if you have angina and may be an indicator to get yourself checked out again, it may be something else, especially if the GTN makes no difference, but it can’t hurt to be on the safe side.

Best of luck 👍
