raised heart rate

Try the BHF Heart Helpline nurse as below.

Or make an appointment with your GP.
But since you are now already well over your maximum heart rate for your age, let alone any safety margin, I suggest you take it easy until you have spoken to a health professional.
If your readings are off a smart watch they may not be reliable. However, the high rate seems too high not to have it checked out if you think it's accurate.
get checked out, smart watches aren’t reliable. I had a high heart rate on my watch while putting it on. Any movement while recording heart rate on them are abnormally high.
Your absolute max should be 160.
I think it depends on your measuring method. My fitbit watch can show much higher than my garmin chest strap during the same session. Good luck.
Hi,
I'm a recently retired TT'er, a little older than you.
There are no absolutes in this - my max heart rate, despite what people say below, was around 170 last season but my performance was a little off.
There are issues with some devices, especially when it comes to measuring irregular beats. Talk to your GP - they're the ones who can decide if you need a Holter test or ECG. After an incident in November during a virtual event I'm just getting back on the bike, but my race days are over. Good luck......
I had a FItbit that indicated my exercising heart rate was 172 - I am 75 . If fact it was around 135 to 140 on stopping walking and taking my pulse immediately.
Fit bit was wrong by 40 beats /minute
However, you should still get assessed incase there is some evidence of a temporary heart condition eg post Covid myocarditis
I would get a stress echo which will determine if there are any issues eg ef valve ischemia etcJust because you have always been fit enough to achieve this heart rate does not exempt you from the passage of time
My cycling coach always said if you notice an increase of 10 beats or more it’s an indication of possible start of an illness /needing a rest . Train conservatively until it passes.
Are you using a chest strap monitor?
Even if you are going off wrist based it should still be consistent unless there’s a connection issue.
How long has it been going on ?
Hi wurzel99, I would advise you get this checked out with your GP who may refer you for an ECG to check if you are suffering from atrial fibrillation. Do you have any other symptoms such as palpitations, light headedness or dizziness when exercising?
no dizziness or pain or palpitations using chest strap
Hi there, I am concerned about your fast heart rate . You are a cyclist and I assume you are ralatively fit and healthy. I suggest you see your GP asap. If he thinks it is heart related , he will probably get a ECG done. If not he would like to order some blood test like thyroid function test. I hope this small advice helps. REgards.
Is this only when exercising? There are two pre-excitation conditions which can cause high heart rate, but they tend to do so at any time, even at rest, not just during exercise. But we're talking very high rates like 200+ for no reason.
Possibly get a check for atrial fibrillation are u also getting breathless
Hi there 68 year old hill n mountain walker here. I recently attended hospital for a pre-op for a kidney stent after kidney stones last year suddenly my heart was racing and they had me connected up and it was 214bpm. I said dont worry it will be a panic attack i get them all the time. Only to be told that my racing palpitations ive had since 2018 is not panic attacks and i was told i now have SVT and im on tablets for life with more tests to come. Please see your doctor and take their advice for the minor inconvenience it is you never know it could save your life. I consider myself fit n active n eat healthy but now since October last year i have High BP and now SVT i hate taking medication its so not me. But these 2 little tablets a day will help me continue my love of walking. Please dont ignore the signs like stubborn old me did.Im learning now as we age we need a tiny bit of help goddamit. Hope you get sorted n stay well. 👌🙂
