Acceptable exercises on recovery from Pacemaker Operation?

Hello!

I've just completed my first month of recovery from a pacemaker operation having been diagnosed with normal sinus bradycardia, first-degree AV block and periods of second-degree AV block, Mobitz 1 Wenckenbach. I've always been pretty active and whilst I've been walking the dog every day, I hoped to begin easing back into more aerobic exercise by cycling on a static bike in the gym.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation and what exercise did you do in recovery?

As we are all different, age, health conditions, general fitness etc the best advice on this in my view is to follow the instructions given to you by your cardio team at the time you were discharged regarding exercise and its affect on your recovery, allied to slowly increasing your level of activity as you intend to do, but above all listen to your body, and if it is telling you you are doing too much, wind it back, and only you will know when that happens. Hello. I had a pacemaker inserted just before Christmas for 2 : 1 AV block. I walked every day and was advised could do more strenuous activity after 4-6 weeks. Did a hilly walk last weekend (7 weeks post op) and felt good. The advice I had from cardiology was to just see how I felt. All the best!

You'd probably get more responses in one of the Pacemaker Facebook groups, lots of people sharing their experiences.

the only thing I was advised was not to do any exercises that involved lifting my arms above my head, so no weightlifting for me then!

I had my pacemaker fitted last June, but major surgery in August delayed everything with exercise for me. However I was cycling on the exercise bike by October and now cycle indoors of course for at least an hour to two hours daily and walk whenever I can. I would keep walking and going further and you will feel yourself getting better and then start off with an easy cycling and build yourself up.

I was told that as long as I didn't lift my left arm above my head for the first 4 weeks, I would be able to do any exercise I wanted as long as it was within my general level of fitness. You may find that you are able to do more exercise than you could before your PM. I certainly could, and it has given me a whole new lease of life.
