ESA claim for cancer patient

I'm wondering if anyone has successfully applied for ESA as a cancer patient. I have a history of cancer and have now developed cardiomyopathy as a side effect of the chemo and radio. I applied for ESA as I have had to stop teaching. When completing the ESA50 Capability for Work Questionnaire, I ticked the cancer box and my GP completed page 24 - Cancer treatment - and stated that my side effects are likely to limit all work indefinitely. I did not complete the rest of the booklet.

Has anyone applied under similar circumstances?

Will I still need a face to face/phone assessment or will I be put straight into a Support Group?

How long does the application take from one the ESA50 is submitted?

Thanks in advance!

It's a mine field and rammed with red tape. I have Liver Cirrhosis along with Chronic Arthritis and applied. My initial claim was rejected without being given the opportunity of a face to face appointment. I then applied for PIP as my GP told me I wasn't fit for work. That involved a real myriad of forms and evidential back up. I got through to the face to face assesment and thankfully I got a sympathetic assessor. Anyway, I was granted PIP and about a month later I was granted ESA Contribution based which came as a surprise. Make sure you declare any earnings and savings as this can affect how much you get if they give you earnings related ESA.

Thanks for the replies and advice. A quick update - I spoke to DWP today (after a very long time on hold!). They told me that I have been put in the Support Group and will confirm in writing. So to answer my own questions (in case anyone is in the same situation), no assessment (face to face or phone) and it took about 8 weeks from once I submitted the ESA50.

You will get your payments back dated from the date you applied, 8 weeks.
