First rehabilitation class yesterday

I attended my first rehabilitation class yesterday, and it was a very positive experience. I even managed to work up a sweat while feeling secure in a safe and supportive environment. My heart rate stayed relatively low, peaking at 105 bpm, but I was informed that, due to being on beta blockers, an additional 30 bpm could be accounted for.

However, I have a question: about an hour after the class, I experienced a throbbing ache in my chest that lasted a few hours. Has anyone else experienced something similar? For context, I haven’t engaged in any activity beyond walking since August and recently had my second stent fitted at the beginning of December.

Also I’m really struggling with any length of sleep, I’ve been working with OH but it’s been really difficult to get 4-5 hours unless I have a drink

Hi Golfer,

Firstly I' m.glad cardio rehab went well for you, it's mentally so important and rewarding when you do this so good on you :)

Regarding chest pains did you do any chest excericse during rehab ie weights, resistance training which engaged those areas?

Could you "touch" the chest pain directly or did it seem more widespread?

Did you use gtn spray and if so did it remove the symptoms.

I would give the cardio rehab team a call today and talk to them about what happened, it's best to get some medical advice from them first.

When I did my first cardio rehab , I was put on the weight machines and a few hours later I could feel the effects of slight DOMs and touch the area.

Please give them a call today and I wish you all the best.

Hi

Only exercise we did that really hit the chest was the wall press. The pain has eased considerably over night but I will make a call.

The pain was literally over my heart and felt like a throbbing feeling. It peaked a few hours after the session and gradually eased through the night.

I’ve been really struggling with my sleep so just phoned doctors hoping to get seen today

You should at least discuss this with your cardio rehab team when you next visit. Or you could talk to the BHF Heart Helpline nurse as below. If it returns talk to 111 or if it appears to be serious ring 999.

I had same issue after my first cardio rehab class - chest pain , took spray . It does get easier but don’t expect too much of yourself which is the trap I fell into after surgery

Your correct to be concerned and mention it to the heart nurses

I’m 5 months post op and still get chest pain short of breathe etc . Had a bad night last night

Well done for going to rehab the biggest lesson you will learn is confidence in yourself , Other people in my class have had a heart attack and struggle with the exercises , weeks months later

Sincere good luck in your improvement

Thanks

Yeah it’s little steps but since Thursday feel better in myself mentally and physically.

You don’t realise how much it knocks you till you try and replicate what you used to do in your head. I certainly can’t do no where near what I was doing 5 months ago but I know with time and effort I will get better stronger and feel more confident in myself.

I'm 18 months post op, AVR, CABG and 2xPCI, I'm now 72. I've just done my 50th parkrun this morning, never been a runner in my life but I enjoy doing them now. I also do a cardiac gym circuit session weekly (Fridays). I can assure you it does get better, I'm now fitter than I was 15 years ago and doing things I wouldn't/couldn't back then or since. I've got my confidence back now but still need some ongoing 'comfort' hence the gym circuits.

Rehab is vital, the cardiac gym circuits are run by the same team as my free rehab, if you are offered the chance to carry on do so, there's a small fee for the instructor but the benefit is immense.

Congratulations on your 50th parkrun! Your journey is truly inspiring, and it’s amazing to hear how rehab and staying active have made such a difference. Thanks for highlighting the value of ongoing cardiac circuits—wishing you continued health and success!
