I have had heart problems for 45 years roughly. I have a defibrillator fitted 22 years ago . My question,is has anyone had a knee replacement, whilst suffering from heart problems. The reason I am asking , is I have bad arthritis in both my knees , which has worsened a lot lately.my consultant is very reluctant to operate on me . Because of my problems. Ps. I will be 79 yrs on Xmas day.

I am not a medic but I guess the surgeons concern is due to the anaesthetic. But there are now other possibilities other than a general anasttic. There are spinal anae...a friend had one of these for a hip replace and then her knee.I had one for an emergency caesarian many years ago.
I had a knee replacement 7 yrs ago at 63. Biggest problem is going off blood thinners, which I was on because of heart attack and stents. Now I need the other knee done, but they refused because my heart is worse now. They do key hole, but it really depends on surgeon and anaesthetist. They always base their decisions on the best for you and your heart. Take care. Moni
I too suspect it's the concern over anaesthetic. I had a heart attack in may and my bad luck continued in that I broke my hip 5 weeks ago. I was given the option of a spinal anaesthetic and given the diff risks for each procedure but chose to risk anaesthetic as I didn't want to be awake. It all went well I was worried about all my heart meds being stopped but it was only for a few days. I would ask your consultant to explain specifically what is concern is and it really is thena decision only you can make but at least you have all the facts. Good luck
I had nstemi and quadruple bypass July 2023. On October 17th 2024 I had total left hip replacement aged surgery, I had spinal block and an anaesthetic. Discharged from hip consultant care after 6 weeks . Cardiologist consultant had no concerns prior to surgery.
I had an Aortic valve replacement and then 6 months later a total knee replacement followed 12 months later a total hip replacement. These were both done under spinal block with a sedative so no issues related to anaesthesia.
My mum had a hip replacement when she had heart failure. She couldn't have a general anaesthetic so they used an epidural. She was awake the entire time. I don't know if that's possible for a knee but I don't see why not.
