Omeprazole

I've been taking Omeprazole for just over 6 years, having been prescribed it following my last angiogram.

I've recently read of the increased risk of stomach cancer associated with long-term proton-pump inhibitor use, which has worried me.

Has anyone else been taking Omeprazole or any other PPI for as long as me and if so what's your experience with them?

I have taken a PPI for over 15 years for reflux disease and it works well to control my symptoms and I do not have any side effects. As far as I am concerned if I didn't take it the consequences for me would be far more serious than the small possibility of osteoporosis, or not absorbing nutrients or now apparently stomach cancer which seems to deter people from taking a PPI. So as for all medication there is a possibility of a side effect so you have to balance that again at the intended good it is doing you. In your case however if it is only prescribed to 'settle the stomach' due to the possible impact of taking other medication, such as aspirin, you could discuss with your GP trialling not taking it to see how you get on. And if you are found to happily function without it there is no need. But that is an issue between you and the GP.

H2 blockers used to be the front-line treatment in the States, though I believe PPIs are now. I was on ranitidine for 25 years before it was withdrawn from the market over cancer concerns. I switched to famotidine (another H2 blocker) which I've been on for an additional 5 years.

(I have a hiatus hernia which if untreated slightly increases my chances of oesophageal cancer. So it's probably 6-of-one, half-dozen-of-the-other in my case.)

my husband has been on PPI’s for 30 ish years.

Yes I've been on Lansoprazole for 4 years. Like you read an article about how long long term use can cause a multitude of long term issues. At present I'm weaning myself off them.

hi. I’ve been taking omeprazole for about 10 years. I weaned myself off it as I was scared of the risks but I ended up with an ulcer. The risk of an ulcer (while on warfarin) outweighs any of the other concerns for me. Please be careful about stopping this medication.

Thanks all, it's interesting to know how long other people have been taking these medicines. I'm intending to ask for a review of the medication with my GP, so will see what transpires from that.
