Hi Granny pat, if you'd asked a week or so ago I may have been able to give some advice such as make sure you are up to date on housework etc and have plenty of easily prepared meals in stock !

Presumably you have all this in hand. Otherwise just try and stay calm. I'm sure you will be in very good hands. The team will know that patients are usually quite nervous and will do their best to allay your fears.

I've had 5 ablations and come through unscathed! Last one in June this year. I was similar age to you when I had my first and admit to being quite petrified at the prospect so understand how you feel. You will be well looked after.

Wishing you well! Let us know how you get on !

PS....forgetting how old I am ( shaving off a few years mentally ..lol!)...i was actually 64 when I had my first ablation.

Hi Jalia, I had my ablation on Tuesday..it was harder than my cardiologist thought as my heart seems to like to be in A/Fib. I'm still taking it easy as resting on the sofa. I had a really sore throat afterwards and some chest pain later that night. Feel better today, but don't feel like going out the house yet. Taking off the dressing was worrying as the area did bleed a bit. But stopped after I applied pressure I am surprised you have had 5 done. At the moment I'm thinking never again. But eee what happens in the next 3 mths. 🙂

Pleased to hear that you got through OK. Sore throat is quite a common complaint afterwards, likewise some chest pain.

Be kind to yourself and rest as much as you can. I always found that taking off the dressing was a bit of a trial......you don't know quite what you are going to find ! It's only early days and by the end of week 2 you should feel more like your old self ( minus AF of course!)

Best wishes

J

Ps....looking at other replies to you, I've had ablations with no bruising and others with quite a spectacular show!

I had my first ablation last Sept and like you, was worried about what would happen. All I can say is I had no need to worry. They really look after you and put you at ease. They understand you're anxious and will talk you through everything. You won't be allowed to drive for a few days afterwards and are advised against lifting anything heavy for a while. No bathing for a few days and expect to be tired. I was told to expect some chest pain for a few days afterwards as the heart has been 'damaged' by the ablation but it wasn't anything too bad. I'm now waiting for a date for my next one as the AF has returned, but good luck. Oh, take a good book or something as there's usually a lot of waiting around.

Thank you for your advice. I'm trying to just go through the procedure as best i can and hope for the best. I hope your 2nd ablation for you is successful.🙂

Hi Wonky heart.. I had my ablation on Tuesday. It took the cardiologist longer than he thought as my heart seems to like be in A/fib. Like you said it wasn't as bad as i thought. I'm just a bit sore and some chest pain, they had to do a cardioversion as well and I've had pain after that before. So not sure if it's from that or the ablation I guess from both. I don't have much bruising around my groin which im surprised about I thought i would be very bruised. What was yours like. 🤔

I didn't have any bruising either which I hadn't expected. I was glad I'd been told about the chest pain afterwards as I would have worried about that, but for me, the overall thing was that after a few days of tiredness, I felt so well. I didn't expect to be as good afterwards as I was. I know right now I'm back in the throws os constant AFib, but am hoping the next ablation works as well. Good luck with your recovery and don't do too much too soon.

Thank you so much for your reply, I have been on the sofa resting since being discharged. I plan to take another 2 weeks of work as I want to give the ablation every chance . Please let me know how you get on to. 🙂

Hi, it was ok in the end. Longer than I thought as the cardiologist said my heart seems to like being in A/Fib. I've had a sore throat from the TOE and some chest pains. Not painful in the groin area just a little sore and no real bruises there. I'm in a normal rhythm and taking a heart rhythm drug I guess until I see the cardiologist in 3 mths time. thank you for asking. 🙂
