hello , my husband went for a pre op assessment on Friday and told he had a heart murmur.

He is 64 , no symptoms , very fit and active.

Has a GP appointment tomorrow.

Should I be worried

i’m 70.. seemingly i’ve had a heart murmer for years .. Consultant arranged an ultrasound that discovered a tiny leak somewhere in the valves had the scan repeated a few years ago.. seemingly no major change .. no action required.. hopefully your husband will be fine regarding the murmer 👍

Thank you ….. that’s reassuring to hear.🤞🏻 he will be similar.

I had a heart murmur when I was pregnant, forty years ago. Then it went away. It’s just something they might pick up but no cause for alarm as long as you have been investigated.

Hi, I have had a heart murmur for years. I know it's my aortic valve. Currently waiting for an echocardiogram to check the valve and aortic root which I know is slightly enlarged.

Hello :-)

I have a heart murmur due to a slightly leaky valve

I had to have a triple Bypass noty because of the murmur but when I asked my surgeon why they did not do anything about my valve her reply was that there are so many people walking around with a slightly leaky valve never causes them any problems and they may never know they have one and a lot of the time if they are slightly leaky they will not get any worse and unless they did it is a better to just leave them and she reassured me it was nothing to worry about

They may decide to get it investigated but if they did don't worry it will be just to check if that is the cause and if so that it is just slight and as he seems to have no other health issues and is fit that is a good sign :-)

Let us know how you get on :-) x

I don't think that the GP will be able to tell you any more but should refer your husband for further investigations (ct scan, echocardiogram, CMRI) to identify the source of the murmur & to determine future treatment or surveillance plan.

Did his op get postponed pending the outcome of these further investigations?

hello , yes the nurse said she will refer her findings to the anesthetist …so hopefully it will go ahead.

Hi I was born with a heart murmur and still have it now at 60yrs old. I’ve lead a normal active life though I do have to take antibiotics for any surgery such as teeth out. As a child I was stopped from most physical activities as at the time cardiologists thought this was the right treatment. I do have a slight leaky valve as found on MRI whilst checking my pericarditis so it’s now monitored again but only as part of the pericarditis checks.

I’ve never actually been physically aware of my heart murmur to be honest. I had horses all my life, hiked, climbed the three peaks without any issues.

Only my pericarditis stops me now but it’s not linked to my murmur.

I would think albeit your husband’s murmur is monitored he should be fine.

A heart murmur is very common. Most folk live without even knowing about it. Normally it is nothing to be concerned about, difficult I know as we seem to be conditioned to treat any heart problems as life threatening.

Mine was only picked up after I had a heart attack and two stents implanted. It turned out to be a regurgitating Aortic valve which has been replaced via OHS. That was because the regurgitation was severe. I’m now fitter than I have been for 15-20 years and enjoying life to the full.

I was born with a heart murmur and it has never affected my life. As others have said a lot ifvpeople are born with heart murmurs and have no problems

My husband was told he has a heart murner too, waited ages for an echo but they couldn't find anything wrong and no further treatment.

It wasn't until 2020/2021 I found out I was born with a hole in my heart. I had to laugh as I have had 3 major operations and 2 minor ones all with a dicky heart. 2021 had MRI and it's small in that side of my heart between my heart and lungs. Thankfully the connections between the chambers of my heart are intact. I am now 66. Have PAF been on Ramipril for years but started on Flecainide and Apixaban in 2021 after attending the AF clinic.

Lot of people have heart murmurs so I would get your husband to ask for a referral to see a cardiologist as they know exactly what tests need doing.

Try on to worry.

thank you everyone …I’m feeling a lot calmer. …think my husband is too!!!! He has just gone off to see the GP so will update later.

Morning granny squares ,

My daughter has had a heart murmur since discovered at her infant school ! She is now 53yrs old and is well , she’s fit does lots of exercise , try not to worry and go by ur doctors !

Take care Sue xx

hello, well husband saw the GP who didn’t seem unduly concerned. She could hear something and said it sounded funny!!!

She has referred him….probably a couple of months but said to carry on as normal , he could have been born with it or it may be hardening of a valve. Said if he was 80 it may be more worrying!!!

We are both calmer now and will try and forget about it until the appointment comes through. Not sure if he will be having the op…need to wait until we are contacted.

Many thanks to everyone for helping me through the weekend

Take care

Better that any issues are found, and allowed to be treated and you be aware to help prevent worse outcomes.
