Can I half my 1.25mg bisoprolol to wean off instead? Anyone ever cut such a small dose and had success?

How about just missing a dose instead if you can't cut the tablet. It's a very small dose.

I tried missing a dose and my HR skyrocketing

I'm assuming that you've been told to wean off then?

Yes by cardiologist

Try breaking . You can actually buy a pill cutter if not successful. ....at chemist or Amazon

P s ...you may find the other half crumbles away but just discard!

Yes I did. Bought a pill splitter off Amazon. Did two weeks of half and then nothing. Felt better since being off it. Gp said fine to try and see how I went without it . Just said to let her know if shy chest pain

I'm part way through this process, first week did 1.25 and half that on alternate days, now on a half tablet daily. I bought a pill splitter from Amazon. Halves aren't always equal but it evens out over two days. Under a lot of stress due to a massive water leak at home. Also going away for 2 weeks. Once I'm back I'll come of the remaining dose if my house is properly habitable and I can use my kitchen and utility again

Has being on half of 1.25 made you feel any better symptoms wise compared to being on 1.25?

Yes, my resting heart rate has increased from 49 to 51 and my heart is slightly quicker to respond to exercise. I'm no longer dropping to 42-44 at times which was making me very tired. . I'm going on holiday to Scotland for 2 weeks so staying on the half dose for now and will stop it once I return.

Having tried splitting a different small pill I found a lot depended on the brand the pharmacy gave me. Some, usually the ones with a slightly shiny surface, split neatly, but the chalky ones just crumbled.

Can I ask why you are weaning off ? What condition etc? I’ve been on 1.25mg bisoprolol too, almost a year . After Nstemi heart attack and quadruple CABG in July 2023. Initial dose was 3.75mg then reduced to 1.25 and half a 1.25mg ramipril.. my resting heart rate is 47-50 through the week. Was 49- 50 prior to heart attack , kept setting the alarm off on the monitors.

Seems such a small dose, got a telephone review next week with consultant.

Hi, I cut my 1.25mg bisoprolol with a tablet splitter, a bit fiddly but OK, cardiologist said fine, I've now stopped it with no problems at all,I know we are all different. Good luck.

Did you feel better on half 1.25 compared to 1.25 any symptoms

The only deference was my heartbeat went up more on split tablet, bisoprolol with me made my heartbeat to low, 40s resting to high 40s active, now without bisoprolol in the high 60s, I'm not so tired now and can walk further, so happy to be off it, hope all goes well for you.

if you are having problems with your medication I advise consulting your doctor.

I’ve used a pill cutter to cut these very small tablets. ( I was reducing bisoprolol from 7.5 to 5mg daily in two divided doses),. It’s difficult to get the tablet into 2 equal halves. I ended up with quite a bit of wastage. So make sure you’ve got enough tablets.

Hi

I’m on the same and spoke to my doctor and he told me to take it every other day, but I would only do this on the advice of my doctor.

a pharmacist is also qualified to advise on this

Im weening off 1.25mg Bisoprolol which I have been on for just under a year following Drs consultation . Told to to take it every other day for the 1st week, then every 2 days for the 2nd week, every 3 days for the 3rd week then don’t take anymore .

I've been on since Feb, tried to do what you said above under gp and cardiologist guidance couldn't get through one day without it. So told to cut in half and try that instead for a couple weeks. How's your weening off going so far? What stage you at? Why you stopping?

Skyfella profile image
Skyfella in reply toTachyjay

I started on Monday so only in my 1st week, so far been ok , heart rate up a little on the day I haven’t taken it but nothing too adverse . Told to monitor HR & BP . We will see what happens next week ☺️.

Stopping due to good results from a 7 day holter monitor and no follow up needed from cardiologist. They think I had a “one off” AFIB event but was put on bisoprolol until results of holter came back .

How long was you on them for and what dose

Coopergirl52 profile image
Coopergirl52 in reply toTachyjay

I was put on them after my HA in April 22 a dose of 5mg then they noticed last June 23 that my BP was very low so the dose was halved to 1.25mg BP didn't go up so doctor completely stopped it on the 29th August this year now not on any BP medication.

I’m coming off 1.25 too. First week I broke pill in two with difficulty. Second week I took one every third day and this week I will stop altogether. GP and pharmacist said to try stopping to see if it made any difference to the awful icy burning sensations in arms back and chest I’ve been getting for months now after heart attack and 3 stents . No difference with that but I don’t feel so held back as before. Dr said if improvement he would change my med from bisoprolol to something else.

First instance ask the cardio team or go for advice

my 1.25mg are tiny. Are you on them daily ? You could try every other day.?

REM your HR should be around 60.

Max HR should be 220 - your age.

Tachyjay in reply toBlackknight57

Yeah daily make me feel horrible though, I will try halving them
