morning,

Had bypass and aortic valve replaced in 2016, this was at the Golden Jubilee Hospital in Glasgow.

Hope it’s of some help.

Best wishes Pauline.

Thanks Pauline / sounds great - how old were you?

I’ve got cardiovascular disease otherwise heart good even after NSTEMI and cardiacarrests!

I was 68 at the time. Just had my yearly echocardiogram last week as my valve is a tissue one and 8 years old next month , everything was okay so onwards and upwards.

A friend's wife had triple valve surgery in 2017 at Royal Brompton. All good seven years later and he struggles to keep up with her, and he is younger! 🤣

I had triple bypass 8 weeks ago in Edinburgh I'm 60 still sore but hoping it will all be worth it soon 🙂

Well done - it will be I’m sure - Thank you so much - for your response. Do you know what the criteria was that resulted in bypass and not more stents?

weepip profile image
weepip in reply to Gigi70

2 were 95% blockages one in my LAD and other was over 75% ive others but not sure what happened to those 🤔 I'm a type 2 diabetic and I was informed that stents block back up with diabetic. There is a family history with my mother and brother both having bypass at the age of 50 and 53

Also ghe blockages were long

Hello :-)

We are not supposed to mention Hospitals so I will just say I am in the Midlands and I had a triple heart bypass and was 58 and it was nearly 3 years ago now :-) x

Gigi70 profile image
Gigi70 in reply to BeKind28-

thank you - for that - do you know the criteria as here is London is all about stents?

BeKind28- profile image
BeKind28- in reply to Gigi70

Hello :-)

For me the arteries could not be stented one that was blocked was where they would not reached it and the arteries were to bad the stenting would have not been appropriate

Not sure if that explains it or maybe not :-) x

I had a triple bypass in January this year at Papworth and i'm 53. This was after having a HA in September 2023 and 1 stent put in. Three arteries were significantly blocked so the decision to operation was made for me which I'm thankful for.

Hi,

I had a double bypass in 2001 when I was 45 at a private hospital in Cheam, Surrey. The surgeon was from St George’s. A stent wasn’t suitable due to position of blockage.

It's always uplifting for me to read about people that have had a long life after this surgery ! It gives me hope!!

Hi I had a triple bypass ìn after my heart attack 2020 I was 49 .Mine was done in one of the London hospitals and they were excellent.

Angelique71 profile image

Just remembered also that because I was 53 that a bypass would last much longer than having stents.

I had stent after heart attack then triple bypass and Mitral tissue repair Dec 2019 and stroke King's. Agreed to a few research programmes as so few women take part and they need information on us too. Only suitable for one proogramme post stroke.

I'm sure we are not allowed to mention hospitals? Not sure why? I had a double cabg 18 months ago. My condition is genetic on my mother's side. I had 3 heart attacks due to blocked arteries. 2 stents failed as the arteries and stents collapsed .

my cardio vascular disease is on my mothers side - she was refused a quadruple bypass 27 years ago as she was female? I have inherited the same my brother is free of the FH gene and has low cholesterol. I am a fitness adherent never smoked don’t drink alchohol. But the cardio vascular disease rages on! Bypass are rare in women but I understand this is being researched and things maybe changing.

Gosh!! I know alot of women who jace had a heart bypass!! When I was in hospital there were 8 with en recovering from bypass surgery. I have never heard of it being rare in women

Milkfairy profile image

It maybe more to do with women having their heart symptoms overlooked as well as not being offered the same interventions including surgery as men.

So perhaps not rare but under recognised and under treated.

There is an accepted unconscious bias in Cardiology which needs to be overcome.

excellent article - thank you - my request for bypass falls on deaf ears - I’ve been told for 11 years too dangerous in women?

I had a triple bypass 2022 as I was told stents wouldn't last as I'm diabetic. I was 56.My grafts failed straight away. I then had no choice but to have stents February 2023.

I'm now on edge that my stents will fail. I'm not sure what my prognosis is.

Bypass, in most cases, is the better, long term solution. I'm in the minority.

Hi….i had a quadruple bypass done at the end of June last year. It was done at Southampton General. They have an amazing cardiac department and I would always recommend them.

Hope this helps in your research? Why are you wanting to know BTW?

Do you know why your consultant chose bypass and not stent the arteries?

Max1019 profile image

my artery was pierced accidentally during an angiogram, they tried to see if it would re-seal with meds, but a week later had an episode that confirmed I needed a bypass. Pretty traumatic!

I had a successful quadruple heart bypass in September 2015 at St George's Hospital in London. I only wish that someone had advised me to use a soft "lounging" bra to support my breasts immediately after as the weight of them caused the scar to "spread" and I now have a much wider scar than men who have had the same procedure. Theirs is a barely noticeable thin line whereas mine (although now much faded) is much more noticeable.
