Can anyone explain why GTN spray makes you feel so rubbish. I know it can save your life and you need to use it for chest pain

It allows oxygen to circulate around your body, but your body isn't used to it, it's a bit like an adrenaline rush 🤣

It always makes me very sleepy if I have to take a lot of it, the crapness you feel afterwards will go once you’ve been taking it for a while. The sleepiness I get doesn’t seem to be going though.

I had gtn but found it made me dizzy only for a little while but my cardiologist recommended diltiazem long acting, this has changed my life,I'm on it twice a day as a bit older, but have no fears of getting chest pain and can walk my dogs as far as want

The GTN spray is a fast acting nitrate.

Within a few minutes GTN relaxes and dilates the blood vessels in your body lowering your blood pressure. This increases the amount of blood flowing to your heart and helps relieve your symptoms of angina.

It can feel as though your head is going to explode when you first use GTN.

You can feel light headed, dizzy, get a banging headache or feel sick because of the drop on your blood pressure.

Many people overtime get used to using GTN.

I personally don't use GTN anymore as it works briefly but I then get worse rebound coronary vasospasms.

Maybe discuss with your Cardiologist or GP if there are any alternative medication that you can be prescribed?

I’m on Isosorbide Mononitrate to open my blood vessels. It might be worth asking your consultant if that might help with your pain, if you’re having to take the GTN regularly.

It's brilliant stuff!!

I was first diagnosed with angina, over 10 years ago when I first used it.

The first few times I used it it was a "bloody hell" moment as that rush of oxygenated blood hit me head...the feeling soon dispersed and over time the initial "hit" didn't effect me as much.

I learned to use the product proactively and began using it before things that would trigger my angina, walking up a hill, doing a couple of fast dances for example, this stopped the angina pains.

I had a heart attack 3 years ago and haven't needed to use the spray since my angioplasty, but I still always carry one.

6 months after my stents, I suddenly started to get heart burn, gaviscon did'nt work, but the GTN spray did! I continued using the spray everday for 2 months until my GP sent me to hospital. I was given a new set of meds and I have not used the GTN spray since.
