I have been diagnosed as having ventricular ectopic beats an 1st degree heart block. Despite this I am fit and usually very active. I have been taking 1.25 mg for 2 weeks and am noticing the following:
- intense hunger shortly after taking the tablet
- general fatigue and malaise
- disturbed sleep
- lower blood pressure
- slow pulse 53/54 bpm
Does anyone else have these side effects and will they settle down and improve?
Im still having ectopic beats although my heart isn’t pounding now and is quieter

I’m on 2.5 Bisoprolol and have been since my O.H.S for valve replacement 10 months ago. I have a history of consistently low B.P and it did plop through the floor when I was initially prescribed this when in hospital. Is always now chronically low
I believe tiredness is one of the common side effects of the medication and it certainly hasn’t got rid of my ectopics. It can also cause a random runny nose and weight gain - amongst other things. Oh joy! However, one of my surgeons advised me that it ‘calms everything down and is the heart’s friend…’
I had exactly the same happen, my pulse was in the low 40’s. My gp kept reducing meds and still the same thing happening. Now I am on 24 hr monitor and fingers crossed today I might get a decision, either to sort out my blood pressure or palpitations separately!
Consultant has prescribed another med to take. GP has said they will do the same thing too!
So far Bisoprolol or propanol have caused my pulse to go slow too much!
Meantime palpitations, racing heat etc are having a party! I am new to SVT- 61 years old, fit and healthy. Did was like someone flicked a switch on 13th October 2023 !
Bisoprolol is a drug in the group known as beta blockers. The lowered heart rate and blood pressure are what the drug is intended to do in order to ease the load on the heart.
Known impacts of Bisoprolol include lowered heart rate, lowered blood pressure, tiredness and disturbed sleep.
All of this is covered in the leaflet included in the packaging.
I've been on 1.25mg for 10 months now following OHS and still get tired at times but it keeps my blood pressure stable so I'm not bothered. My resting heart rate is normally in the mid 50's as a result of taking this medication but can drop into the high 40's on occasion. My doctor will not increase my dosage any further as a result.
I think that your heart block condition may be the primary cause of your slow pulse rate. However, I was prescribed Bisoprolol for AF and struggled with it. I do a lot of high intensity training and found that even a relatively small amount of physical exertion caused me severe breathlessness. I spoke with my consultant and was put onto on to Diltiazem, a calcium channel blocker which has solved the problem. I believe that the Bisoprolol also caused me some degree of sleep disturbance.
I'm on bisoprolol 1.25 and i dont feel tired nor have disturbed sleep. In fact my sleep is better than before i was taking them. Previously woke up 7-10 times a night and now maybe 3-4. However, i have WPW and i think it was this which was waking me up, and the bisoprolol is calming any WPW episodes i may have been getting in the night,
Wolf Parkinson White. It's a pre-excitation condition. It's basically an extra electrical connection in the heart which bypasses the AV node and can cause SVT and other things.
I was given Bisopralol after my heart attack. It dropped my BP so low I could barely get out of the chair. I could have slept 24/7. Couldn't tolerate it at all.
I’ve went from 2.5 to 5 a week ago and have felt lethargic from the increased dose but on the positive side, more thoughtful, measured and maybe less anxious.
You don’t say what your pulse was before taking it I don’t think. You could just have a genetically low HR. Mine was 48ish when I was young and got down to 46. When I started taking 2.5 it would generally settle at 42-45 but sometimes get down to the high 30s. Increasing the dose hasn’t depressed it that much at rest. However it takes a lot longer to go through the gears now and I find getting up I can get a bit dizzy as it’s just not pumping fast enough. I’m adapting though.
Hope that’s of some use and very best of luck with it all 😀
thank you all for your experience and knowledge. My 24 hr bp monitoring came back all good and no meds given. My GP is now writing to my consultant to as for further advice on what meds to recommend? As I am still having palpitations, pounding and racing heart episode but no meds to help! I am trying not to be anxious atm, with no meds to help! Hubby brought me a Kardis ecg monitor and it is registering happenings!
