I have been diagnosed with a mild leaky heart valve. Am now waiting to see a cardiologist. I have recently started Bisoprolol but my heart rate is in the low 50's & tonight is 48.

A bit concerning that it is so low. GP did say that if it dropped below 50 it was too low.

Are you taking Bisoprolol for high blood pressure?

Hi Mitchum. Yes I was put on bisoprolol for slightly raised blood pressure as unable to tolerate most other meds.

Oh ok! Don't worry too much about the leaky valve. I had the same for decades with no adverse effects on my life, until surgery when it was severe. Then I had a mechanical re-placement 20+ years ago and now live as normally as possible and grateful for every day! All the very best!

Hi marshmallow, just out of curiosity which heart valve is leaking? Also being on bisoprolol might lower your resting hr too which might make you feel tired etc but everyone is different. What symptoms are you having do you get breathless or have palpitations etc? I was diagnosed with a mild leaking mitral valve which apparently is common and nothing to worry about depending on severity of it and left ventricular hypertrophy at 1.3cm( thickening of the wall of the left ventricle) and prescribed bisoprolol to help ease the workload on my heart. Unfortunately over the last 4 years I've been having bouts of low resting hr of 38 so was taken of the bisoprolol to see what my true resting hr is but it's still low around 44 sometimes and told i have bradycardia. I was fitted with a loop recorder 18 months which has shown events as they happen but nothing has been done about it. I eventually had a face to face appointment with my cardiologist 2 wks ago who has now requested I go for a exercise test to see how my hr performs and then they will decide on their next steps but have mentioned a pacemaker only because all test results from ecg, angiogram etc are positive but they think it might be the vagal nerve causing me the problems. As mentioned by Mitchum do you suffer with high blood pressure hence the bisoprolol because this will lower your resting hr so it might be worth having a chat with your doctor about it. Keep us all updated on how things go.Best wishes

Hi Taz.Many thanks for your reply.

Yes my b/p was slightly high. I have only been on these Bisoprolol fof just over 2 weeks. The b/p seems OK now but it is the heart rate.

I get palpitations, breathlessness & dizziness which is why the GP suggested Cardiology . He did say that the mild leaky Mitral valve shouldn't really be causing all this, so he asked the consultant who thinks, maybe something else may be going on as he looked again at my previous ECG & noticed something on there which I assume they will be checking.

I am considering coming off the bisoprolol & waiting to see what the cardiologist says & what medication he suggests.

I am in pain all over & have actually wondered if mine is coming from the Vagal nerve.

All best wishes

Hi marshmallow, with regards to the bisoprolol I was on 1.25mg but it was increased to 2.5mg once they diagnosed me having lvh but the meds slowed my heart rate down even lower and I felt tired with episodes of light-headedness breathlessness and total fatigue. They decided to stop it after a few months but no gradual weaning off it but straight away which some doctors don't recommend and prefer you to be weaned off it instead so please check with your gp before stopping any meds. The symptoms your having are very similar to my own and its very frustrating after all the test and procedures that's been done over the years to still be unsure on what the problem is. Does your heart rate shoot up on standing then drop like a bomb? Also my oxygen levels drop too when this happens making me feel sleepy and episodes come and go every 3 to 5 wks. I'm going for an exercise stress test next month to see how my heart copes and depending on the outcome they might fit me with a pacemaker. I just want to get back to some kind of normality if there is one and have an answer to it all. Please keep us posted on how you get on.Best wishes

Please don't worry too much regards valve, cardiology will advise. I had a problem with Bisoprolol after bypass and stroke with heart rate going down to low 30s so came off it with no side effects and now back to normal for me 60. Have a chat with GP

Hi.Many thanks for your reply.

I am considering coming off the bisoprolol.

I was told before by a GP that it would be OK to just stop the bisoprolol as only on a small dose. 1.25 mg & only been on them a short time.

It's only been 2 weeks but with the heart rate dropping so low I may be better off waiting to see what the cardiologist advises & go from there.

All best wishes

I started on a low dose, went up to 5mg then 7mg and then 10mg.Not on it now, been put on a different beta blocker. I was having trouble with nasal drip which I thought might be caused by the isopropyl. Maybe not, because I m still having trouble with phlegm.

Sorry to bother you again, Shadesof.Did you have to taper off the bisoprolol ?

You probably did if you had been on it a while? Or maybe not if they put you on a different one straight away.

It's difficult to know what to do for the best. I'm hoping it won't be too long before I get to see the cardiologist.
