Mitral Valve Regurgitation

I am 77 years old and have been monitored for 10 years, following a stroke in 2011. The mitral valve was leaking slightly and now it has increased-as I am getting breathless when walking up inclines.

The hospital has suggested I might be able to have surgery. Am waiting for an appointment to see the cardiologist.

However I am in permanent AFib and was wondering if this would be a problem as regards surgery.

Has anyone else experienced surgery at 77- for a repair or replacement mitral valve and also with the encumbrance of permanent AFib.

Thank you.

Dear Forgetful

I too had a stroke (December 2015) then had open heart surgery (May 2020). I am the same age as you.

If you are reasonably fit and not greatly overweight then you are young enough to have heart surgery. My aortic valve was failing and I became horribly breathless, unable to do much at all. A final reminder was when I started to stumble forwards.

the operation was fabulous. Cardiac staff were wonderful. Recovery takes perhaps 12 weeks. But feeling a bit better every two days it was very good. Then I got my life back, miraculous.

I don’t know the valve is there.

By far the worst bits were waiting for the op.

Since my op, cardiac matters have progressed a lot. The valves are improved, the cardiac department has revolutionized.

you are not too old.

Thank you - that gives me encouragement. Still waiting for the initial appointment, but I like to do a bit of research beforehand.

Many thanks
