Switch from Bisaprolol to Calcium Blockers

Hi all, new to the site. My cardiologist has just switched me off Bisaprolol 5 mg as they had stopped working properly to Tildiem and Ranolazine. He said it was OK to stop the Bisoprolol cold turkey as I had only been on it a few months, but I was wondering if anyone else had experienced their heart rate going through the roof when switching betablockers for calcium blockers? Even a walk round the shop had my heart up to 180+ . Thanks

I’m surprised he has taken you off cold turkey as my husband s consultant said the opposite . As I asked if he could come off them after cardio version in case his heart rate goes to low and he said to reduce if need be but not come off all together as it has kept his heart rate mostly stable .

Thank you, must admit I was surprised too. Having to make a concerted effort to keep as calm and quiet as possible to keep my bpm down.

I had the same problem. I tolerated Tildiem for about a week. Worked nicely at night but in daytime awful. Back on Bisoprolol.

Thank you, glad to hear it's not just me. Apparently I will be having an angiogram shortly, so trying to lastvit out, really struggling to keep my heart rate down as go form 60 to 180 in a matter of minutes.

maybe see a pharmacist for some advice? they know much more about drugs and the helpful practical advice about them than doctors do - it is their speciality after all

Thank you, that is a good idea.

Hi , I was taken off Bisoprolol 5mg a couple of years ago. Like you, my body had decided that, after 2years , it didn’t want Bisoprolol and sent my b/p slowly up to 200/85 which sent me into stable/unstable angina every 10 mins. After a short “spa” day in cardiology the cardiologist swapped me onto Ivabradine - stopping Bisoprolol cold turkey.

It was a life changer! No longer did I get really cold hands, feet and nose. I could also climb small hills, stairs etc without getting breathless. I started to cycle around the village.

I was concerned about stopping Bisoprolol straight away but I was already suffering because of it. The first few days I waited for some symptom but none came. Just took it easy as I could “feel” my body was in recovery.

Good luck! ❤️
