Hi all, I'd like to bring your attention to an excellent BBC Radio4 Doctor to Doctor interview with the famous heart surgeon Prof Stephen Westaby. It's a brilliant story, but he touches on 'old school consultants ' of which he counts himself as one, being in charge, and the price you pay as a patient or hospital administrator, is a single minded person who knows what to do in a timely fashion without much small talk. Late in his career he was diagnosed as being on the ADHD spectrum.
His personal journey is fascinating including a serious life threatening rugby concussion that left him with a personality change that helped his career!
I doubt he had much time for warm fuzzy get to know you conversations with anxious patients! But his reasoning from his perspective is compelling. I must admit that I'm not so fussed about the bedside manner of a busy consultant especially when I'm under an anaesthetic! Can they do the job, and in this case Prof Westaby has enabled the development of cardiology to the benefit of humanity around the world!
If you have thirty minutes enjoy. But be warned if you think you know better than your pharma wedded consultant be prepared to change your mind or shout at the radio!
I'm grateful for the intelligence, skill and dedication to training of all the health professionals who have interfered with my body! And today I was fortunate to experience this uplifting view of Freshwater Bay taken earlier this afternoon courtesy the NHS. Enjoy.
