Bisoprol and asthma??

Sorry me again 😂. I got a call from my GP and they have reviewed medication that I'm on for my heart and they want to do as advised by cardiac team to switch me over to bisoprol but one issue I was worried with is it's a beta blocker and that affects your breathing and I'm asthmatic? I have raised this concern with my GP and they agreed it's best to contact St barts just to be safe. Has anyone been switched to this and Is asthmatic?? Any issues while on this??

Dear Yumz

Yes I took bisoprolol and I am asthmatic. Gp changed my prescription after about one year.I had no asthma problems. In fact during the three years after OHS I have had no asthma flares at all. Long May that last.

Ah wow that's good! So are you still on bisoprol??

I didn’t make that clear, did I ? My GP changed my prescription after about a year, removing the bisoprolol.

My cardiologists I have been seen by will not give me beta blockers due to being asthmatic. I’ve never had an asthma attack but I know I need inhaler when I don’t take my preventer inhaler regularly. They don’t even entertain the possibility of trying them.

It’s a fine balance when you have more than one health issue.

I’m on amlodipine for BP.

👍

That's what I was worried about?? I hope my cardiologist thinks the Same as yours x

in reply toYumz199725

The tricky thing is cardiologists can differ in opinion. But I had three that didn’t prescribe them due to asthma but that might just be me!!!!

It’s so confusing but at some point we have to take a leap of faith I guess (and put in place precautions- don’t be on your own and keep your inhalers to hand if and when you start to take them) although appreciate it will feel scary.

Starting a new med I always find scary.

I hope you are able to make an informed decision but I’m pretty sure they will think it through before they prescribe.

Wish you the best.

I've previously had asthma many years ago. Then last year emphysema picked up on CT scan. Hasn't really given me any bother thankfully.Anyhow I had HA in June and 2 stents fitted separately one in June and one in July. I've been on Bisoprolol since HA 2.5mg which may only be causing some pulsating in body so now it's split into 2x1.5mg daily. It hasn't really affected my breathing, my lansaprazole was doubled though as made reflux a bit worse. Consultant knew of history but said needed to be on beta blocker and Bisoprolol the best as I have tried propanolol and Tenormon (not sure of the spelling) but they disagreed with me. They were given for migraine and panic attacks at different times in the past prior to this year.

At times I have to take deep breath but nitrate spray fixes that when I take it for chest pain. I am waiting to see cardiologist though as cardiac rehab said shouldn't be having chest pain and because it fixes the kind of feeling slight shortness of breath too. I do have a ventolin inhaler but haven't really needed to take it, it doesn't seem to work for the weird feeling of needing to take deep breath like gtn does.

Hope you're feeling more settled with everything soon and wish you all the best.

Hi Yumz

I’ve had mild asthma since childhood, only really triggered by exercise in cold weather or exposure to mould spores and then controlled by salbutamol inhaler with no problem.

I was prescribed daily Bisoprolol 1.25mg about18 months ago for AFib, although cardio knew about the asthma. His view was that the dose wasn’t enough to cause a problem. He was wrong! Everything was fine for the first 6 months or so but the effects then started to show, as I would get random episodes where my lungs would tighten for no reason and I’d need my inhaler. This gradually got worse to the point where I was using the inhaler several times a day. In addition I was getting the most awful chest pain when walking or doing other mild exercise. I was told it was a worsening of the asthma, not the Bb and was given a steroid inhaler which did diddly squat.🙄 Eventually I insisted on trying a calcium channel blocker instead and magically everything settled! It took a few weeks to do so, though.

I suppose the only way you’ll find out how it affects you is to try it but maybe be aware that symptoms may not appear straight away. I would certainly run it past you St Bart’s team first in any event.

All the best to you, TC

I am on bisoprolol and asthmatic, they basically said that for the minimal effect it may have on asthma I would be safe on the low dose of 2.5 been on since 2018, the issue I had was inhaler the blue inhaler caused palpitations as it interfere with bisoprolol so they swapped me to the pink one and I use that twice a day and also as a reliever. Hope this helps.

oh wow I have the same issue with my blue inhaler so I try to avoid taking it unless i literally have no other choice 😕. That's good they gave you a low dose and it hasn't interfered with your asthma x

See if you can have the pink for me it has helped loads and stopped interference with bisoprolol too.

I will see if I even get prescribed bisoprol because at this rate my cardiologist might re think it, they know I'm asthmatic anway which is why they originally prescribed the calcium channel blocker, verapamil.

Iv had no issues. Over the years Iv had a couple of cardiologists ask me if iv had any problems as bisoprolol can make you wheezy if you have asthma, but thankfully all been well.👍

My mother was what I would call an occasional asthmatic. She could go many years between attacks and didn't need her inhalers in between. When she developed heart problems the cardioligists prescribed them, and sometimes the GP would stop them, because she was asthmatic. Then she would be in hospital with cardiac issues and the cardiologists would prescribe them again.A lot will depend on how bad your asthma is and the dose of betablocker.

Maybe you could persuade the cardiologist and your GP to talk to each other.

Sorry to hear the problem your mum had sounds so stressful! Yeah I'm hoping they will reach out and come to some kind of agreement or I don't know what I'm gona do, the verapamil gives me terrible headaches it's awful.

Sorry you are having such an issue, it would be so much easier if they would just communicate.

Hi I am asthmatic, on Fostair inhaler, and I take Bisoprolol with no associated problems with the two at all.

It can be as much to do with 'why' you take the drug as well as the drug itself. For example I cannot take ibruprofen with my bisoprolol but my mum who takes bisoprolol for BP is allowed to take ibuprofen!

Definitely right to double checkwith GP and cardiac team but hopefully all will be ok 🤞🏽

St. Barts prescribed me Bisoprolol and Amlodipine, and I also use a Ventolin inhaler for my asthma. I've been taking Bisoprolol for approximately a year and a half to help lower my heart rate. It's worked fine for me, but everyone's response can be different. I hope you find the reassurance you're looking for.

Yumz199725 in reply toissie_wizzie

Thanks that does help I spoke with my GP today aswell and he reassured me that all beta blockers can have some affect on asthma but bisoprol has a very low chance of affecting breathing. That's cool your with st barts aswell, but like you said can affect everyone differently.

i have not read all the other response so someone may already have suggested this:if you have been seeing a specialist respiratory team for your asthma it may be a good idea to ask them, it might be time for a medication review to ensure that you are getting the best treatment for both your heart and your lungs - these work togther as a team so treatment for one can affect the way the team works

think of a relay team: if one has an injury it slows the whole team down so the un-injured members have to work harder to make up - this means they are more likely to injure and/or exhaust themsleves

This is a good point thank you. I actually did have a phone call from a doctor for a medication review the other day. But I have contacted my heart team to make sure it's safe for me to switch to bisoprol.

Hey I am on Bisoprol as well but I am not asthmatic , however recently I found myself feeling out of breath! Not sure if is medication, old age, tiredness or everything together 😄🤣

I am on Bisoprol have been for 4+years, used to walk for miles no problem, noe I get out of breath if on a slight incline, which is a bit of a problem as where ever I go from my house is up an incline.

Not what you're looking for?
