Statin issues- advice on alternatives.

Hi all

Started on atorvastatin a couple of weeks ago, initially told 80mg but the reflux was grim, on advice of doc dropped to 40mg. Taking Omeprazel seems to help but still pains and uncomfortable.

However, main issue is that it seems to be making me me excessively tired also ( on Bisprolol also so not 100% ). I seen a thread about this on here where an alternative station was mentioned a couple of times but can't find it!!

Any advice on this appreciated.

Cheers

Colin

There's quite a few statins out there - I'd advise speaking to your local pharmacist or GP about trying others as they'll be more aware of what's available and suitable for you.

Get on Rosuvastatin

I think that was the one, required a smaller dosage.... You had similar issues yourself and made the swop?

Yes exactly the same symptoms and also changed from Bisoprolol to Neblivol now all good , tiredness gone , the statins and beta blockers you are on are the cheapest available and not suitable for all , whereas the 2 I have mentioned are 5 times more expensive, hence a reluctance to dispense them , I hope this helps

Do speak to your GP. Mine was very helpful and seemed used to trying a few out, before we settled on one.

I'm sure your GP would be able to advise on alternatives. Also, whether the reflux is likely to be caused by the Atorvastatin or one of the other drugs you may be taking. Clopridogrel is generally the culprit and is prescribed with a anti acid reflux drug such as Lansoprazole or Omeprozole. Good luck.

thanks, I will speak to GP, just getting prepped!! The reflux is manageable with omeprozole, it's the weird tiredness that's more annoying.

Rosuvastatin suits me much better. Couldnt cope with the side effects of Atorvastatin. The max dosage of Rosuvastatin is 20mg. I'm on 15mg one day, 20mg the next after gradually increasing over the past 10 months. My bad Cholesterol is now down to 2.1 but the Cardiologist wants it at 1.9.

All the best

Are you also on aspirin? That is more likely triggering reflux.

But definitely consult your dr. to try a few things.

I would also say this, in a positive way: There are side effects you can live with, and side effects that you can't. Having narrowly survived cardiac arrest, as well as earlier LAD blockage, I can handle acid reflux and some fatigue if taking high doses of statins, bisoprolol and aspirin significantly reduce my chances of another event...

Actually aspirin is thrown in there! As you say the trade off is acceptable. Can cope with the reflux with Omeprozole but the tiredness is doing my head in!! Appreciate the input, thanks.

I was on 80mg atorvastatin initially until I ended up in hospital quite ill with a deranged liver. I'm now on 10mg rosuvastatin and so far so good.

I started on Rosuvastatin last night and had the worst night. I felt nauseous, my blood pressure was high so took a bp tablet and my pulse was over 100, it felt like my heart was banging a big drum, pain in ankle, altogether not a good night.I speak to my pharmacy on Monday as prearranged by my surgery.

I placed the question about Atorvastatin and the problems I was having with it and received lots of good sound advice.I did speak to my cardiologist and he said I had to keep taking the statin and changed it to Rosuvastatin.

I have started taking it but my cardiologist didn't realise I also have stage 3 kidney disease and I go for my yearly blood test next week so we'll see what my results are and if I need to change to another statin.
