ACESS CARD for theatres etc.

I found this on the Lung forum and thought it might be of use to some :)

Do you know about the ACCESS CARD? I found out about it because I want to see a play in London at end of November!!! On exploration I discovered that this card will allow me to take someone with me as a carer without having to show PIP details! I decided to purchase said card - it costs £15 for 3 years. Rather than getting free card. This is because free card is only for use at theatres but purchased card gives more options. The form is quite long and laborious to complete but they are very quick at responding. I got an email with card number the next day so was able to telephone and book play. My card shows - I can’t queue, need a carer, can’t walk very far and need to be close to a toilet.Ideally you phone venues to check will accept card but many do. For a long time I have felt uncomfortable having to show PIP papers as proof so this is a step forward. nimbusdisability.com/qualit...Hope this will be of interest to you.

Hi, brilliant post. I found out about this card just recently but I thought you could use the free one for a number of places, (concerts etc ) where an essential carer can accompany you free of charge, I didn't realise it's restricted. It does take away the need, & stress, of keep having to prove you have a medical condition, particularly as not all disabilities are visible.

Also, did you know that if you get certain benefits you can apply for a disabled rail card? I believe it costs £20 a year which entitles you & your carer to a 1/3rd off rail travel costs. You can also get a disabled bus pass from your council if you're under pensionable age, which I believe gives you free travel on the buses, obviously you have to meet the criteria for theses things. Very handy to have especially if you lose your driving licence due to a medical condition.

I never understand why these things are not more widely advertised!
