Mirtazapine

Hi I've been prescribed mirtazapine for heart related anxiety.

Have any of you taken it and put on weight? I'm definitely not eating more than usual but am putting on weight at a ridiculous rate. I'm trying to keep weight stable but it's proving difficult.

I don't think it's water retention I take spironolactone for that.

Many thanks

These types of medicines cause weight gain as they interfere with metabolic hormones, so they increase your appetite, which normally results in weight gain if not moderated.

You can keep a food diary and make sure you track everything, or use an app like my fitness pal to keep an eye on calories if you're not sure where the weight is coming from.

I'm on 45mg Mirtazapine and they make me feel hungry all the time. I try to not eat extra or any chocolates and ice cream that I constantly crave for so I've not put on any weight.I tried Sertraline which is the first one normally prescribed on NHS but they made me very nauseated.

Thank you. To be honest I'm not sure which med is causing it. Having been on none until Oct 2022 and always been slim, I'm thinking it has to be medication as I'm not eating more.I have to weigh myself every couple of days and limited to 2L x

Hi Familyk

My mum has been on Mirtazapine for over a decade and unfortunately, weight gain has been a side effect of that for her.

Yeah I've recently been put on this and yeah I have put on weight I used to weigh just over 9 now I'm nearly 10 stone only started a month ago. I hope it isn't fluid build up for you. I go to gym aswell which helps to keep me at a good weight if I put on any more weight will definitely switch been told can take up to 6 months to get used to it well for it to work then if I'm not happy I can switch it which as this rate will definitely be doing.

Forgot to mention I'm on 15mg. When I was weighed in January at hospital was 8stone 9 so guess I needed to put on bit of weight. Tablets are great for anxiety and depression mine was getting so bad. Hope your noticing a difference well maybe not yet but you will. 😉😅

Hi, I was on that drug for a while after my anxiety went through the roof for lack of diagnosis. It gave me suicidal thoughts and my daughter threw them away! I can't recall any weight gain.
