palpitations. What are they about?

my friend is having bouts of palpitations and is getting very frightened. She feels she needs an angiogram and from my own experience angiograms happen when symptoms are dangerous. I had my angiogram due to angina. She has spent a night in hospital but they felt her symptoms were not severe. They did a cardiac check and the Dr said he could see some changes. What could be causing palpitations. Thank you. Denva

Hello :-)

I can see you posted two months ago and had no replies and I do not have the answer but I wondered if to the right side of the page as you look you will see related posts and if you read those you might find some advice that may help even though by now you might have the answers anyway :-) x

You don't necessarily have an angiogram when the symptoms are dangerous. Well not in the UK.I had a scan and a stress test before I was recommended for an angiogram. I knew I was having angina pains but the cardiology had to be convinced.

Out of 6 of us who had the angiogram I was the only one who was diagnosed as needing a bypass, at least 2 of the others didn't need any further treatment and I can't remember the other 3.

When you say your friend had a cardio check, do you mean an ECG?

I don't know how things work with you but can your friend pay for an angiogram if they feel they need one?

Hi  Denva

Apologies, it seems like your post has been missed.

What investigations has your friend had so far?

An angiogram is highly unlikely to be performed for heart palpitations.

More commonly, a holter monitor is used in order to record heart beats which will show if there is anything abnormal there.

Sometimes an echocardiogram is also useful in abnormal heart rhythms.

Keep in mind, heart palpitations are mostly considered harmless so your friend shouldn’t be overly alarmed.

How is your friend doing now?

All the best to you & your friend.
