Hello folks,

After a bad year ( the worst possible) my consultant has given me the all clear to fly. Yippee we said until trying to find insurance, so my fellow broken heart recoverers. Who do you use for insurance and is there anyone who goes away for 6 months to live abroad who could recommend health insurance with repatriation to the UK.

Thanks

Not quite six months but I negotiated insurance cover with this company for up to three months away at a time,

holidayextras.com/travel-in...

They will also offer insurance of up to 110 days for round the world cruises.

But it's not as simple as this company offers cover and that company won't. A lot depends on you. Are you having ongoing treatment (or even observation), how long since your last medical intervention, what medication are you on, are you awaiting any test results, etc?

Couple of other things to think about. You need a Global Health Insurance Card, it allows you to access local health care at the same rates paid by locals. That could be anywhere from "totally free" to "free but you pay for meds" to "extremely expensive"! The card is free and you can get it here,

gov.uk/global-health-insura...

You don't mention much about your medical condition. Be aware some airlines and cruise lines will refuse passengers with certain conditions, so check carefully. You may need a fit to travel certificate signed by a doctor, and in any case have a look at this NHS website,

fitfortravel.nhs.uk/advice/...

Good luck!

Hi,

As a resident of the Isle of Man I am not eligible for the Uk Gov global insurance card. So I shall have to try insurance companies. Health wise I’m doing ok, I think. I’ve had very little help regarding aftercare, I’ve had to chase seeing specialist nurses and just started cardio physio before Xmas which I’ve just completed. How much walking on a machine can I do. Saw a consultant last week for 5 mins and that’s it. We are a small population of less than 90 thousand and have 1 cardio nurse so appointments are as rare as hens teeth. Thank goodness Liverpool heart and chest saved they day for me, what will be will be. I know I’m on borrowed time as they say but I don’t want to spend those days sitting at home when I could be sitting in our home in the sun.

Just in case anyone reads this in the future and misunderstands things. The Global Health Insurance Card is in no way an alternative nor substitute for proper medical insurance. It misses many things that are covered by a commercial insurance policy, such as repatriation. And even with a GHIC you can still get stuck for some ferocious bills.

Hello :-)

I know nothing bout Insurance but have read your Bio and you have been through an awful lot so I am so pleased for you that you can now get mainly as you say on a plane again and I hope you have some really wonderful Holidays :-) x

I had an annual insurance with Staysure. It covered me for a cruise and then a trip to Australia in 2022 at a cost of £450. Unfortunately I’m now having tests for chest pain so cannot get health insurance until I get a diagnosis. Glad I didn’t wait until to do those holidays u til this year. Hope you get your insurance sorted and enjoy the travel

hi - I use staysure - for annual cover £450 it covers me to go worldwide and to stay no longer than 60 days . But I feel sure you can extend that for your own needs. Stay sure were recommended to me by a family whose daughter has very serious long term health issues and they have always covered her even for skiing /scuba . I don’t do anything more risky than a spot of walking !

Good luck and enjoy your fabulous well earned holiday - the very best medicine !!
