hello was just messing about looking at Apple health / watch data and come across heart rate variability measurement - mine apparently consistently averages 23 milliseconds. I understand this is the measurement of time between each beat?????? . I’m just curious more than anything.
Does anyone know more about HRV and it’s relevance in general and / or for people with heart issues?
thanks I can see a potential relationship between my low HRV (subject to inaccuracy of my Apple Watch re reading via wrist) and my current state of physical and mental health.
thanks for the clarification and link, and noted re monitoring via wrist being less accurate. Noting it may be inaccurate I am however having significant angina pain. Am limited what can do without pain and usually cream crackered after exertion (simple daily stuff). So my health at present and a potentially low HVR seem to align but I guess due to inaccurate don’t know for sure. interesting it can be an indicator of anxiety and depression (I’m not terribly happy at present). Thanks
It’s not a great guide for those of us with atrial fibrillation. When this was paroxysmal last year, the HRV leapt up from 50s to 200+ during episodes. I could see the end of an episode when it plummeted! Now I’m in persistent A Fib and the HRV is completely - variable! Going from 100 to 200 +.
I suppose it’s due to the irregular nature of A Fib. Great zigzag line I am getting. I still look at it, hoping that it will suddenly settle down.
Hi Gumbie_Cat. HRV does not measure the variation in your HR per minute (i.e low = 50 to high =>150). It measures the variability in milliseconds between each beat. If you had a very uniform heart rate (of any BPM rate) your heart rate variability would be close to zero. If you have a very irregular beat.... your HRV would be high.
