Heart spasms

I have coronary heart and microvasular desease. I endured 15 minutes of sharp stabbing pains in the left side of my heart.

I have been prescribed ranolazine and tildiem, but spasms are spontaneous and very scary and not with exertion.

took my spray and it calmed down.

I have not been told what causes it?!!

Basically. Keep taking the tablets.

Any one else had these??

Hello siennfaith,

Welcome to the forum.

I have lived with vasospastic angina for 10 years.

I experience my chest pain mainly at rest. Mine is due to the transient contrictions of my coronary arteries leading to a lack of blood supply to my heart.

My coronary vasospasms feel like being in labour to me. They can last for sometime.

My diagnosis was confirmed by a functional angiogram when a chemical, acetylcholine was injected to my coronary arteries which induced my coronary vasospasms.

Vasospastic angina along with microvascular angina are types of non obstructive coronary artery disease, NOCAD.

The BHF has this information about microvascular and vasospastic angina.

Have you had any testing to confirm why you are having your symptoms?

It can take time to find the best combination of medication that will work best for you as an individual.

Sadly, there is a lack of knowledge and expertise amongst Cardiologists about the conditions, so you may need to ask your GP to refer you to a specialist.

There are a few forum members who live with microvascular or vasospastic angina, hopefully they will be along to share their experiences with you too.

Hi there

Thank you so very much for responding to me.

At times I have thought that I was going mad with reactions from GP.

I recently had an angiogram in July when they diagnosed the microvasular disease and hence the new medication Ranalozine.

But no body prepared me for the frightening painful spasms that I may endure.

I will certainly be asking for specialist help but fear I will have to learn to live with it like you.

It is more scary thinking you are alone and no one really knows the answer.

Happy Christmas to you.

I also get spasms when I am just sitting about . After a lot of visit to A&E and numerous test found I have a myocardial bridge and the cardiologist has now decided that this is the cause of my chest pains I find that beta blockers seem to help.
