Hello E16Pat, a recent blood test showed I had low haemoglobin and iron.I was diagnosed with anaemia. The GP put me on a course of iron tablets and I am now feeling so much better. For some reason I was fast tracked for a colonoscopy scan which showed no problems. My latest blood test shows some improvement in my haemoglobin and iron levels so hopefully I will be back to normal soon. I do hope a call from the hospital will make your GP contact you very soon. Let us know how you get on.

I'm the same , though my gp checked my iron & ferritin aswell, both are very low so I have to go into hospital next week for an infusion as I can't tolerate the tablets . Ask to have those things checked too

My GP is pretty good, normally, but when I had a low iron (ferritin) blood result because I was not (yet) anaemic no iron precription was given. So I purchased two different lots of iron pills ( cheap) and they both gave me bad gastric problems. Then I tried bisglycinate iron, and it does not affect me at all. I will wait and see if my ferritin level has gone up. I do feel less tired though, ( might be the placebo effect!)

Hi there, my husband suffers from very low iron levels which exacerbate his heart condition. He has been given several iron infusions - they took a while to kick in but he’s feeling much better now.

If you can get in touch with your GP it would be worth asking what your levels are and whether you need an infusion or whether they can prescribe you some high dose supplements. If you find the supplements affect your stomach there is an oral iron spray you can buy from boots that is apparently absorbed quicker and doesn’t irritate the gut!

My iron levels were low on my last two blood tests, not enough to be prescribed anything so I'm taking Fereglobin capsules. I've been on them about 2 months and feeling much less tired and breathless and more motivated. HTH

Hi,

My GP is supposed to phone me but don’t know when that will be, but my wife had a chat to the chemist and she bought Fereglobin liquid it’s looks impressive so I started taking that yesterday, I’m 5 weeks post heart bypass and I’m just so tired

Best regards

Pat

My Haemoglobin was ok but my ferritin level was pretty low. There’s new research that in heart failure patients ferritin should ideally be above 100 to aid with fatigue and breathlessness. I was given an iron infusion at the hospital, unfortunately I had a weird reaction and my face swelled up and my eye closed. They administered steroids , anti histamines through a cannula.

Very annoying as the results of the infusion made me feel like a new person, more energy than I’ve had for yours and far less breathless but they said I can’t have another one.

while you wait for your GP and for your haemoglobin (Hb) levels to increase be gentle with yourself

Hb is what carries the oxygen in you blood, so if yours is at a low level your body will be getting lower levels of oxygen delivered where it is needed, so you will run out of steam and get tired. this also tends to mean you heart has to work harder to try and deliver enough oxygen. It's a bit like having a shortage of delivery drivers for the supermarket.... the shelves get empty!

So take it easy - it takes about 6 weeks for new red blood cells (which contain the HB) to reach maturity. It's going to take a while to rebuild your levels once you start some treatment - and remember that they are constantly being replaced too.

They say that iron in food is poorly absorbed but don't let that stop you from eating the iron rich foods which are good for you and that you enjoy. Plenty of info online about these.
