so my BP (usually 120/75 ish) suddenly shot up to 204/110 and despite various medications it’s currently hovering at 160/95. I was swimming a mile 4 times a week and now I can’t walk up a flight of stairs without getting out of breath.
I’ve had a 10second ECG which my dr said is fine and I was previously diagnosed firstly with Graves’ disease which was treated and I’ve since developed hypothyroid about 2 years ago.
my kidney function is fine but the fatigue, breathlessness and continuing high blood pressure are worrying me .
Had anyone experienced anything similar please? I am 54 and female

Hi, sorry to hear about your BP difficulties. It is worth noting that hypothyroidism can cause a high Blood Pressure (when both numbers are high). Your other symptoms could also relate to low thyroid function, so it may be worth checking your thyroid function. Certainly for me, sudden increases in my BP are corrected with corrections to my thyroid function. It is important to work with your GP on managing both BP and thyroid function. I hope that this helps.
thank you for your reply. They did a thyroid blood test and it looks ok so I’m staying on 50mg levothyroxine. I just hate the breathlessness and not being able to exercise 🥺
as per my post of today I too have these B/P surges, headache, red burning face Just started on Raporsin XL 4mgm it is very scary as in AF had to come off Lercanidipine for B/P surges.
When my blood pressure goes up, like yours has, it's usually a sign that I have gone into atrial fibrillation. It affects me badly. I get so breathless and, like you, cannot get up a flight of stairs easily. Once I get back into sinus rhythm I am fine, can swim, cycle, walk, go up stairs, dance etc, easily. You say you had an ECG. Was that showing you were in sinus rhythm or could your problem be a fib?
Hi Spaggy I have a similar story! ! Was fit and healthy until massive sudden high BP very limiting now to exercise. Get your Dr to pinpoint exactly what is causing high BP,mine was due to Conns disease. I believe there is a link with thyroid problems. Just a simple blood test can diagnose the raise in hormone Aldosterone. Good Luck.
