Hi

My dad had a triple bypass at the end of last year. He was not in a good way after and was in a coma for a few months. He is now back home and now always feels cold with exceptionally cold hands whereby he has always got a hot water bottle wrapped round them. Any help or advice would be great

Hello :-)

Is he still on blood thinners you are usually on them for a year after if so these can make you freezing cold I used to be I could not get warm no matter how hard I tried but once I came of them I was not as bad

Maybe he should just check with his Doctor but this could be a possibility

I hope his recovery is going well in every other way :-) x

Have you discussed this with his GP or cardio team? Fingerless gloves, or wrist warmers (ie gloves with no fingers) can be helpful. I hope he finds something that helps him.

As an interim measure a set of fingerless gloves and a padded gilet might be worthwhile measures as both would still allow reasonable freedom of movement.

However the root causes are either with blood flow or with the medication. Bisoprol at a high dose could cause the symptoms as could other medications. So this needs to be checked out. A good first stop might be the pharmacist who will be qualified to give an opinion on the medication and its likely impacts. Sometimes our bodies are just intolerant of one medication but can accept it when changed to an equivalent

Cold is very common due to the blood thinners my hands and nose can be painfully cold even in reasonable weather.

But clothes and gloves sort most of it except my nose and teeth! If your fathers hands are that cold definitely worth getting him to the doctor's

Dear Hoxley77

Your poor Dad and you have a right to be worried about it as feeling cold is a miserable thing.

First it is very common among us and I was warned of cold extremities, hands, feet, nose and in male cases the penis { very odd sensation }

In the worst times the only way that I could heat up was to have a hot bath/shower, after a few months I got used to it and now wear gloves even indoors sometimes, I still wear a face mask { cloth } outside as that keeps my nose and face warm with my breath.

It will be worth mentioning it to his Dr on his next visit, the strange thing is that I personally don't feel any colder now the temp has dropped.

I wish your Dad well and sending love to you as I know that it is not easy when a loved one has been so ill.

Take care

You have had several replies suggesting a chat with the GP - which is good advice. I'm guessing your Dad may be on a beta-blocker like bisoprolol. If you read the side effects of bisoprolol (in the patient information leaflet) you will see that cold hands and feet is a common side effect. My cardiologist reduced my daily dose of bisoprolol and my cold hands and feet were quickly solved, while it still did the job on my heart rate and blood pressure. So this is another thing the GP might be able to try.
