I am a female, 74 years of age and have trouble walking unaided. I had a Cranial MRI which revealed I have had multiple mini-strokes unbeknownst to me. I have been prescribed 80mg Atrovastatin and feel nauseaus.

Hello & Welcome :-)

I am sorry to hear you have found out and must have come as a shock you have had multiple mini strokes

Are you on any other new medications or just the Atorvastatin ?

They can sometimes make you feel this way but not sure how long you have been taking them but we can adjust and the side effects lessen

However if you have been on them a few weeks then I would contact your Doctor there are several they can try you on that might suit you better

Let us know how you get on :-) x

Thank you for the welcome. I am not on any other medication and started these on Friday past, so only five days. I am having an Eco-Doppler Carotidea (neck) next month after which I will see the Neurologist.

Hello :-)

Five days is not very long and yes you can have side effects a few weeks but if they are really bad and making you feel really ill you could do with talking to your Doctor or you could phone your usual pharmacist up and ask for their advice they are very good :-)

Good Luck with the Eco-Doppler Carotideo test and I hope the Neurologist when you see them will be able to get you on the right treatment to prevent this happening again :-) x

dear Minkies

as Bekind has explained, there are many statins that can be prescribed in lieu of Atorvastatin.. Your 80 mg is a high dose, mine is just 20mg.

The great thing about mini strokes, or TIAs (transient ischemic attack ) is that they are transient and should not have any lasting effects. They can be a warning that a stroke might follow and now you are being monitored the warnings are hopefully being addressed.

I had perhaps ten TIAs but I didn’t know what they were. I wrongly assumed they were just mega migraine. I then had a stroke and you really do not want a full stroke.

But why the difficulty with walking. That is not good and let’s hope your doctors can give you an explanation. And then some remedial treatment.

Very best wishes

Sooty

Hi Sooty and thank you for responding.

I sincerely apologise ... I am on 40mg not 80mg as I stated!!! Senior moment.

I have had my left hip replaced three times (long story and on strong antibiotics for five months) and my left knee. I have had a lot of phyiotherapy and it was thought my unbalance was from these incidents. But I decided there was something more so saw a Neurologist hence the discovery of the ischemic leukoencephalopathy and multiple lacunar infarcts. I was never aware of the incidents at the time but it was perhaps why I fell causing the leg incidents.

Thanks for the good wishes ... I am sure all will be resolved.

Minkies (that is what I call my cats) xx

Initially I was taking 40mg atorvastatin after a TIA mini stroke and put some new aches and pains down to it. Knowing it takes a while for your body to adjust to new medications I contacted my GP after a month and she suggested I reduced the dose to 20 mg which I did. I have not had any problems with them since . Suggest you make a GP appointment.

Sorry, just saw this and thank you for your comments.

Two weeks on and it is settling down. I have an Eco Sonar Carotid on the 26th then see the Neurologist on 19th November so will discuss it with him then. I don't have a GP involved.

Black cat Sooty is my pet, a singleton Minky.

He really helps me through the hard times. I adore my cat. Only pet I have ever owned. He came to our bungalow and he adopted us. Amazing creatures. Gives me a reason to get up when I don’t feel well. He is a big cat but very gentle. I love the warmth when he curls up on my lap. Takes the mind off of endless medical woes.

Best wishes

Colin

Sooty is lovely. I had a black cat for 20 years called Magic Sam (Boo). They are very comforting indeed.

I will keep in touch how I go with the tablets as it has only been six days and I wish you well.
