Work are now asking what restrictions I must observe with have a defibrillator fitted...

The people that fitted it are the best to advise you. Were you given any guidance when it was done? I was given a leaflet relevant to my device about avoiding certain situations. I think magnetic fields can be a problem. Otherwise, try phoning the BHF helpline.
As I understand it it depends on your specific ICD and the specific equipment you will be near. You probably need to contact the manufacturers of the equipment. I believe the electron magnets that lift sheets of steel and cars are the worse!
I was in a similar position to yourself after having my pacemaker fitted. I had several discussions with the company doctor regarding me returning to work. I was a mechanical engineer on the shop floor of a large car manufacturing plant in Essex. Between the dr and occupational health they wouldn’t let me return to my role due to the large amount of magnetic fields I would come into contact on a daily basis. Fortunately I managed to take early retirement as I’d just turned 55. So really the company should really be looking at your welfare not just relying on you to decide whether you can do things or not. Hope it works out okay for you.

I think they are considering my health with this, unlike yourself, I am a stock controller and although I have to visit the shop floor from time to time, most of my work is done in an office away from the magnetic fields, so fingers crossed I should be ok.
