Propranolol withdrawals?

Hi everyone, I was prescribed Propranolol 80mg daily in 2020 for anxiety. Ive been taking it ever since. However i decided I no longer needed it, so stopped! Ive had several episodes of feeling really dizzy whenever I move suddenly. Im not sure if its related but I'll check in with my G.P as soon as possible. I am also prescribed Felodapine to keep my blood pressure lowered and Sertraline 100mg to manage my depression. I must add, I'm within a healthy weight range, exercise regularly and have been vegetarian most of my adult life. Has anyone else experienced withdrawal symptoms from Propranolol?

Hi,

I recently had bisoprolol stopped suddenly and had bad withdrawal symptoms with dizziness, palpitations, etc. There is some evidence that it's better to be weaned off beta blockers rather than stopping suddenly and I went back on them at a lower dose.

Would always discuss with a doctor before changing or stopping medication.

Hi Dinkydo,

I’ve not used Propanolol but I’ve used Paroxetine.

I’m fairly certain with any anti-depressant/anti-anxiolytic, you have to withdraw very slowly by reducing the dose over weeks &/or months. Definitely not a good idea to stop suddenly.

I’d have a word with your GP to discuss withdrawal &/or an alternative medication.

Best wishes,

Paul

I have taken Propanol for tension headaches and reduced it very, very slowly when I decided that I didn’t need it any more. Don’t remember any side affects tho. Always worth checking with your GP or pharmacist. It was my pharmacist who told me how to reduce both my Propanol and Amitriptyline.

The advice on beta blockers is to reduce the dose in stages over a period of days. Propanolol has an elimination half life of 3 to 6 hours, so if you stop taking it suddenly it will very rapidly be eliminated from your body. Within a day, most of your last 80mg tablet will have gone. However, since you have already stopped taking it you should consult your GP about any effects that might be having on you.
