myocarditis

my son 19 developed stabbing chest pain with bad tonsillitis and ended up in hospital for 6 days on 2 types of antibiotics and many different blood tests scans etc. When he went to hospital his Troponin level was 935 leaving it was 53.

Only advice 2 weeks rest then can slowly introduce exercise. No work 2 weeks. No more advice than that!

discharge letter - to have an MRI.

Any other advice you can give us. What time scale should we be having this MRI in? Sooner or later?

An event like this must be very scary for you all. Did he get to speak to one of the ward Doctors, before leaving? Usually, if we ask to see one to have our questions answered, they are very helpful.

Perhaps he could give the ward he was on, a ring.

Hi,

I'm currently recovering from a bout of myocarditis - you'll be able to see my story in my previous posts if you want any background.

I was initially advised to rest for 4 weeks, but following the CT and MRI to confirm it was myocarditis, (about 5-6 weeks after discharge) that was increased to 3 months... but to be aware it could take up to 6 months for recovery.

The only consistent and overwhelming advice that we're given is rest, rest and more rest... difficult to do if young and active... or in my case, impatient and anxious. But the heart has gone through a trauma of sorts, and it needs rest. This seems to be a condition that convalescence is the best medicine.

If possible, gave your son keep a record of how he's doing... where are the pains (arms, back, chest, etc), how severe, how frequent, any other symptoms (breathlessness, lightheaded, tingling, anything out of the norm for him). It would give him info to take back to the doctors.

Myocarditis is usually something people recover from when caught like this... it takes time and everyone is different... but your son is young and it seems to have been caught early on, so hopefully recovery is swift. Do try to talk to the cardiology doctors, they'll be able to answer anything specific to your son.

sorry to hear that this condition is affecting your son and causing you concern - you might want to look up the Myocarditis Foundation myocarditisfoundation.org/p....

As Captain Birdseye indicated, s longer period of rest is usually recomeded to allow the inflammation to resolve -the inflammation affects how well the heart muscle uses energy to pump, so the heart pumps less efficiently when inflamed - rest is important as this allows the heart muscle to repair and recover - it has to keep going 24/7/ unlike other muscles around the body which can rest when not in use, so it is important to reduce activity and make fewer demands on the heart
