I would not be considering supplements in any form to act as you intend before first discussing the situation with your GP who will be able to offer solutions if one particular statin is giving you side effects, and appropriate medication to lower your blood pressure, or even perhaps for the latter some suggestions for life style changes which may mean medication is not actually necessary.

Thanks for replySpoke to gp and pharmacist both said ok to take with the meds I am on

However changing lifestyle is a fair point to lower BP

Really enquiring if anyone has had experience of using Q10 as a lot of comments mainly positive from various heart forums

in reply to Markp7119

More to the point then what did your GP say about the statin side effects and lowering your blood pressure as you reported above. Are you saying the GP is happy for you to take a supplement of potentially unproven efficacy rather than actually address your apparent medical problems?

As I commented elsewhere there are several statins to choose from, and often it is just a case of a change to another statin to eliminate any side effects, although that is not guaranteed.

Thanks for your reply My gp is changing my meds to try and bring my BP down to 130 currently between 140 and 150

Indifferent about Q10

Muscle pain is manageable but thought Q10 may help

I take 200mg per day of Natures Best CoQ10 to ease muscles aches caused by taking statins. Works for me. But everyone is different.

I take 300g which I buy from Amazon from The Intelligent Health company. My doctors and consultants have never said anything against it. No side effects. Recommended to me by a friend who is a retired nurse in the USA

Dear Mark7119

I am Vegan so a lot of my supplements are for basic stuff that you would naturally get from eating meat and fish.

Every single one of those supplements have been passed or dismissed by my Cardiologist, one of the { many } dismissed ones is C0Q10 the reason given was that it could interfere with the statins function that I am on.

Remember that this is just me but hopefully it will make you think first.

As LowerField has already stated there are other statins that may suit you better.

Ask why you are on a statin, we are not all on them because of cholesterol levels and this could be a clue to how the COQ10 may interfere with its function that they want from it for you.

Even your pharmacist would not know that unless he/she had access to your medical records.

We are lucky and the drugs offered to us today, be they single or in combinations have been tried and tested by millions before us so that we can benefit from there use, why upset the apple cart with self experimentation?

Take care and please let us know.

I had jumpy legs until I took Q10. It really seems to help. I am on a cocktail of heart drugs too. I’ve also been on the inclisiran trial, for over 4 years, where the research nurse regularly checks all my drugs and non-prescribed supplements . They say no problem with Q10.

I take Q10 the best sauce is fermented for absorption and naturalness!

Alot of people on here say "I wouldn't do that see what your doctor says" the medical system has to follow a narrow general protocol but everyone is different

Anyway I take statins and Q10 worked for me taking 200mg i will go higher as I train alot.

You don't need to talk to the doctors period ....just try a little first then increase

Any suggestion on this site in response to a post that there is no need to consult your prescribing physician when it comes to changes in medication or the taking of supplements that may directly affect any prescribed medication is seriously flawed in my view and in fact as I understand it may contravene site posting rules, certainly in the case of medication changes. Just because some bloke down the pub or someone on Facebook, or for that matter someone on here, says it OK doesn't make it right. The medication that most of us on this site are prescribed are to sustain our lives and in some cases prevent us from dying, and any ill informed dabbling in how they work may have serious consequences for some.

I take CQ10 200mg a day. I’m on avortostatin 80mg. I’ve taken CQ10 as a preventative for possible muscle side effects from statins I’d read they’re the only things warranted for further research into the subject. I’ve not seen any research on if they are definitely effective. I have degenerative arthritis in my spine so will get joint and muscle pain related to that. As for muscle problems from statins. I’ve tolerated 80mg for 12 months, any muscle / joint aches do take longer to settle but settle they do. And before my HA I’d have taken brufen which is a no no now. Anyway I’m carrying on with CQ10 as I can’t see anything else out there. That’s just my experience.

I've been taking CoQ10 for years, before I had heart failure. After I was diagnosed I increased to dosage to 200mg per day and my cardiologist was fully aware. I've recently stopped taking it, not because of any issues but because I am waiting to go on a clinical trial supported by the BHF for CoQ10. I want try this as I am not suitable for any surgical intervention to support my heart.

I had my Heart Attack in 1988 and have been on Statins for more years than I care to remember, under advise from my GP at the time I started taking Coenzyme Q10 supplements as the statins can cause problems with the liver (have an annual Liver Function Test). The ones I am taking are from Healthspan 200 mg, I take one capsule each night with my Statin. As always though do check with your GP or Heart Team as we are all different as to what our bodies will tolerate. Best wishes.

I take 200mg Co Enzyme Q10 daily and am sure they’ve helped with energy levels. My cardiologist endorsed this and recommended I buy fat soluble ones. I researched online and settled on the ones on the Healthspan website.

(Briefly): When I was first prescribed Statins in 2009, I researched the drug (in peer-re iewed articles only!) and found that CoQ10 was basically a PRE-REQUISITE for anyone taking Statins. I ´dutifully’ queried this anyway with my Cardiologist AND my GP.BOTH the Cardiologist AND the GP confirmed that this was indeed the case and that CoQ10 was indeed ‘required’ for a number of reasons in people taking Statins! So, I asked the OBVIOUS question to both: WHY is CoQ10 NOT being prescribed automatically alongside any Rx statins??? BOTH answered: The cost of CoQ10 makes it prohibitive!!

On statins (& off), I take CoQ10 300mg (Swiss BioEnergetics - Amazon).. on the (continued) advice of now 4 different Cardiologists and 3 GP’s.

To All (& Lowerfield, et al in particular): It is rarely - if ever - a good or indeed, intelligent idea to hand over all individual Agency to any one person, one organisation or one ´school of thought’ for that matter.

NO ‘one’ Body (in this case, Western/Conventional Medicine) has, or will ever, have ´all the facts’ and to assume &/or blindly trust that they do, is (in the proper sense of the word), ignorant.

in reply to Simes11

I would rather trust the advice, at least in the first instance, of a health professional rather than someone I met down the pub or someone off Facebook, or for that matter someone who has perhaps read something off tinterweb, and that forms the basis of the comment 'go see your GP.' Whilst health professionals are certainly not infalliable, their advice and guidance is certainly more reliable than the aforementioned.

Can’t say I would ‘trust the advice of someone down the pub, off Facebook or (on face value) read off tinternet’ or in any social/media outlet either, be it TV or newspapers. “Don’t believe everything you read”, right?! 😊
