Ive been prescribed a beta-blocker Bisoprolol alongside a GTN spray for my Angina condition which has recently developed.I also have a non-critical atheroma in my LAD artery which has been present for 15 years and is a result of FHC in my family .Im taking Nustendi statin for this.
Is it safe to take a low -dose beta-blocker followed soon after by the GTN spray for a chest pain?
Im concerned that they will both lower my BP to a level that would cause dizziness and/or fainting, as Ive noticed Im waking up and get dizzy for a few minutes after standing up first thing in the morning so I dont want to aggravate this.

With the greatest of respect I don't think any of us here would be qualified to give you a definitive answer & would suggest you start with your GP or Cardio team, We all react differently and know I have no problems using my GTN spray when needed - yes I also take Bisoprolol and a range of other heart meds but am quite tolerant to nitrates.
Any questions concerning side effects from medication should be first discussed with your GP.
Bisoprolol is med you take every day and builds and stays in your system where as the gtn is a kind of a one off med only when you get pain. If your using gtn on a regular basis then you’ve got a problem. The main thing with gtn is it fast acting and because of that it drops your blood pressure very quickly you must sit down and relax when taking it and remain seated afterwards.
As others have said you need to speak to your GP or Cardiologist.
After my heart attack I was prescribed 3.75mg Bisoprolol, other medication and GTN. I had issues with Bisoprolol and it took a while to get the dose right for me. The problem I experienced was severe dizziness and wanting to pass out when I stood up from being seated for a while. I got the dose lowered and I am okay now on 1,25mg.
I don't think that my prescription was anything out of the ordinary, with both Bisoprolol and GTN being prescribed. For me (and I know opinions differ here) Bisoprolol has never had a significant effect on my blood pressure. It just lowered my heart rate. At 3.75mg the rate was in the 40s; now at 1.25mg my heart rate sits more comfortably around 55. I no longer get the combination of low heart rate and lowered blood pressure when standing up.
I would certainly speak to your GP or whoever made the prescription about your concerns. We all need to be confident about the medication we are taking.
It looks like you have been prescribed a typical combination of medication for angina. Bisoprolol I believe is used to lower blood pressure and has many side-effects but can easily be replaced by another medication if you have problems with it. Just ask your GP! As said above it is quite different in function to a GTN spray, which is used for short-term relief if you have pain on exertion. It doesn't seem to work for me, however.
Dear patrick8bx
A warm welcome to you and your first post.
Interesting question and as many have said on here unfortunately we are not medically trained to be able to answer it fully, only your Gp/Heart team can.
But having said that due to feeling dizzy on Bisoprolol 2.5mg my Cardiologist moved it to my evening drug slot and the effects disappeared over night.
If you need your GTN spray during the day { i very rarely use it now } maybe this will work for you.
BUT ONLY YOUR DR/HEART TEAM CAN ADVISE THIS, please do not do it of your own back.
